Why did the people cut down the trees on Easter Island?

When the Europeans came in 1722, the island only had a couple thousand inhabitants. There was no social order or structure and people were starving. The lack of sea-worthy boats meant they were reduced to eating the rats and small insects that inhabited the island. There were trees all around the island that reached up to ten feet and didn't go higher. However, as the time progressed, the civilization also progressed. As society progressed, new innovations came into light. The people on Easter Island would use the palm trees that populated the island to build shelters, boats, and other necessities.

Do you think it was human degradation of the environment that caused the society to collapse? Or were there other causes?

The loss of forest was a near deathblow to the islanders, they wont be able to grow enough crops to fill the void in their diets. streams dried up, and the topsoil eroded, and fires became a luxury which all made the society collapsed into civil wars. then the European setters arrived, they decreased the population of island people through diseases.

What were the effects of cutting down trees?

At first, the effects were beneficial to the inhabitants since the wood provided material to build things like boats, houses, and other things. However, there came a time when the trees capability to reproduce was matched by a number of rats. The rats would eat the seeds and stop the trees from reproducing. When the trees started getting low in number, people didn't really notice so they kept harvesting. As the number of trees decreased, the social wellness of the collective decreased. Fires would become scares and hard to work for since there was no wood to be found. Around the time the Europeans came in 1722, the island was in disarray.
