🎶 BluEcoInVET eTwinning Project – Creating a Song with Sumo.ai 🎶

Dear Participants,

As part of the BluEcoInVET eTwinning Project, we will be creating a unique song using Sumo.ai, incorporating slogans from each participating country. This collaborative effort will help spread awareness about water conservation through music.

📌 Instructions for Participation:

1️⃣ Review Your Country's Slogan – Below, you will find the slogan created by your country.

2️⃣ Modify if Needed – If you would like to adjust or change your slogan, feel free to do so. Ensure it aligns with the theme of water conservation and sustainability.

Established in 1997 and based in Istanbul, TUDAV plays a significant role in marine research and conservation efforts in Turkey. The foundation's activities encompass a wide range of marine-related topics, including sustainable fisheries, marine biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of the Blue Economy. TUDAV organizes workshops, seminars, and publishes reports to enhance understanding and implementation of sustainable practices within Turkey's maritime sectors.

• 1914: With the reorganization of the Ministry of Public Works, the "General Directorate of Public Works Affairs" was established to develop water-related works under state management.

• 1925: The "Directorate of Technical Water Affairs" was created, planning for twelve departments to manage water-related activities.

• 1936: The Çubuk I Dam was inaugurated, becoming the first dam of the Republic.

• 1937: Renamed as the "Presidency of Water Affairs," projects for dams and irrigation were accelerated.

• 1953: The DSİ was established as a legal entity connected to the Ministry of Public Works under Law No. 6200.

• 1954: DSİ completed its organizational structure and began its operations.

This chapter examines the economic geographies of the Blue Economy in Turkey, which is on the agenda of international organisations aiming to develop the existing economies and support the environmentally friendly green economy further. For this purpose, the study reveals the sectors related to the Blue Economy, the place of these sectors in Turkey's economy, and their spatial distribution among regions for the first time by using the blue growth framework of the European Commission from the perspective of economic geography. The findings of the study show that the Blue Economy has a significant potential in Turkey's national and regional development. While the Blue Economy in Turkey is close to the EU level in terms of size and development, coastal tourism dominates the Blue Economy as in other countries. We also found that the Blue Economy has spatially concentrated almost entirely along the coast and in the country's five major cities (Istanbul, Antalya, Muğla, Izmir, and Ankara), which further reinforces the current geographically uneven development process.

"Water is life; we must protect it together!"

Questions we asked;

1. At what intervals does our school receive a water bill?

2. What are the measures taken at school to save water?

4. At the end of the event, do we want to evaluate the difference between the new bill and the old bill?

I participated in the TURMEPA Blue Teacher Network March Training Meeting, which was held Online for Our Project Disseminattion

During the meeting, we received valuable information about the environmental efforts of TURMEPA (Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association), a non-governmental organization established in 1994 for the protection of Turkey’s seas and coasts. The association’s work—especially in education, coastal cleanups, and awareness-raising projects—was highly inspiring for both teachers and students.

Organized within the scope of the Blue Teacher Network, this meaningful event also drew attention to the importance of protecting water resources as part of the March 22nd World Water Day celebrations.

I was honored and pleased to take part in such a valuable gathering.

To celebrate International Zero Waste Day, our school will organize creative and educational activities to promote sustainability and highlight the goals of the EU Green Deal.

Why It Matters:

The Blue Economy depends on protecting our marine ecosystems. It focuses on reducing environmental waste and preventing the pollution of water resources. Every action we take to reduce, reuse, and recycle helps preserve oceans, rivers, and lakes for future generations.

Activities Include:

Recycled Material Creations: Students will design useful or artistic items from waste (e.g., bottles, cartons, fabric).

Green Avatar Videos: Students will create avatars using tools like Voki to explain how reducing waste supports the Blue Economy and Green Deal.

Zero Waste School Action Board: A display where students share pledges, tips, and posters promoting a waste-free lifestyle.

Together, we will show that “Less Waste Means a Bluer, Cleaner Planet!”

The interest in the marine environment which plays an especially significant role in solving climate change and plastic pollution problems has shown itself with the formation of various concepts. Significant developments have been started in recent years in life below water, the 14th goal of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. In this context, the sustainable blue economy concept put forward by the European Union for the oceans and seas is the last of these developments. In this section, the concept of sustainable blue economy has been evaluated together with its economic, political, and environmental aspects, and sectoral processes such as shipping, fishing, tourism, etc. have been examined in Turkey. The fact that Turkey has a coast to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea has brought it to a critical position in marine environmental policies. For this reason, both its position as a candidate country for the European Union and its role in African and Asian countries have necessitated studies on the maritime policies of Turkey.

Importance of the Blue Economy for Bosnia and Herzegovina

• Economic Development: Creation of new jobs in tourism, energy, fisheries, and the maritime sector.

• Sustainable Development: Using natural resources without depleting them.

• Green Image of the Country: Bosnia and Herzegovina as a destination for ecological tourism.

• Regional Cooperation: Joint projects with neighboring countries for the protection of river basins (e.g., Drina, Sava) and the Adriatic Sea.

  
  

The blue economy represents a great opportunity for Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in the fields of sustainable hydroenergy, tourism, and environmental conservation. The development of the blue economy in Neum, with its potential for marine tourism and maritime industries, is especially promising. It is important that development proceeds according to a plan, respecting ecological standards, in order to ensure the well-being of both nature and society.

The concept of the blue economy has emerged as an important paradigm in the discourse of sustainable development, environmental protection and economic growth. Rooted in academic literature, the blue economy encompasses the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems. It refers to the sustainable exploitation, protection and renewal of the marine environment. It covers a variety of sectors, including fisheries, maritime transport, coastal tourism, offshore energy and marine biotechnology. 

The concepts of fisheries and aquaculture, maritime transport, coastal tourism, offshore energy and marine biotechnology constitute the components of the blue economy. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture are at the core of the blue economy. It aims to maintain fish stocks at biologically sustainable levels and to ensure that fishing activities do not harm marine ecosystems.

40 percent of the world’s population lives in coastal areas, more than 3 billion people use the oceans to make a living, and 80 percent of world trade comes from the seas. Oceans and seas play an important role in global trade. From the consumer goods trade of imperial times to the oil trade that powered the Industrial Revolution, from being a source of income for people living on the coast to sea tourism, the oceans should not be treated as an infinite resource. Like every substance and/or living thing on our planet, it can be damaged and at risk depending on the conditions.

June 2023 was also the warmest June in global ocean temperatures since record keeping began in the 1970s, according to the Copernicus report. Rising ocean temperatures are increasing ocean acidity levels, changing fish and marine mammal migration patterns, and damaging coral reefs, mangroves, and wetlands.

When we discuss the Blue Economy, we are talking about all economic activity relating to oceans, seas, and coasts, including renewable and marine energy, transport and engineering, fishing, and coastal tourism, as well as business and innovation ecosystem growth and support along shorelines. It also includes other related, but not necessarily production industries like marine research and development (R&D) and education.

Collectively, this is a huge sector, and growing, worth an estimated $1.5 trillion annually, according to the World Bank. By 2030, the Blue Economy, the seventh largest economy in the world, is expected to double to $3 trillion a year, supporting the lives of more than 3-4 billion people by that milestone.
