Shmoop Pronouns I and Me

I versus me. A la Shmoop. An identity crisis.

If you've ever spent a day at school in your life, which we certainly hope you have, you've probably heard the following.

Kelly. So then, like me and Veronica, went to the cat fashion show.

Teacher. Ah, ah, ah, Veronica. And I.

The problem, though, is that some students will go overboard and start changing everything to I. For example, what's right? This is between you and me, or this is between you and I?

Well, to answer this question, we've got to get back to the basics. I and me are both pronouns. Which means they're words that take the place of nouns. And there's just one difference. I always takes the place of a subject, and me always takes the place of an object.

For example, take George and Kelly over here. Let's say George says to Kelly, I love you, unless he gets very nervous, in which case he might accidentally say, Me love you. George is the subject. He's the person doing the action, the loving in the sentence. So naturally, he uses I instead of me.

Now, the same thing applies, of course, if there's more than one subject. Kelly and I are going to the rodeo this weekend to taunt some bulls.

You could also just think of it like this. If it's the subject of the sentence, it's going to be I. If it's not the subject of the sentence, it's going to be me.

Thank you, Justin Timberlake.

Gracias, Justin Timberlake.
