2000 British and Commonwealth soldiers are aboard a ship bound for a POW camp in Italy when they are torpedoed by a British sub 5km off the Greek coast. 500 die instantly. Abandoned by their Italian captors who have taken the lifeboats, nobody is coming to their rescue. Freddie Jones, who had been transferred to the ambulance corps in North Africa after refusing to continue fighting, was attempting to keep his fear of water under control, dreaming of his beloved Margie moments before the torpedo hit. Freddie grabs his medkit and springs into action, desperately compelled to save as many men as possible, but in the chaos and terror aboard the stricken ship, he must face down his own demons first and not lose his rapidly fraying sanity as his own father had done in the horror of the First World War. As the forward hold fills with water, men begin to jump overboard to their deaths rather than go down with the now-listing ship. A lone German engineer takes the controls and a huge African soldier jumps into the hold swirling with bodies to save the injured. Unlikely alliances form, but with a huge storm building, can Freddie and his new comrades bring about a miracle with the odds so stacked against them?
