What speaks to you in relation to your own practices as an early childhood educator?

I worked in a mental health center with youth ages 13-22. During my time, I learned that the majority of youth who are institutionalized will always be. They will move from the youth programs to adults and so on. Seeing young people be in and out of a mental health center with no real progress or support is the main reason I decided to be an early childhood educator. I want to help children develop coping strategies in their early years that will contribute to their resilience, hoping that it minimizes their need to be institutionalized. My desire to promote a positive lifestyle and development for children to help them develop their ability to be prosperous and healthy as they age is what speaks to me.

How would you ensure your curriculum is supportive to all children and families? What support would you need?

I would ensure the curriculum is supportive to all children and families by building relationships with both families and children to help me gain knowledge of the parents and children that will support the creation of a curriculum that is responsive to all family's needs. Working as a team with my colleagues to develop and build a curriculum to allow different perspectives and completing professional development opportunities about how we, as educators, can support all children. I would need the support of my colleagues and bosses to work collaboratively and have opportunities for professional growth. I need the support of families as well to have open communication.

Include a seasonal pedagogy and ant racist strategy.

Relationships in seasonal pedagogy is the concept that all beings must connect with others for learning and growing. I would implement this to help children with their communication skills during play. Using toys, such as little people I would create a dialogue between two toys about helping each other, working together, and how they feel about being together.

An anti-racism strategy I would like to implement in my practice is having one day of the month where, as a classroom, we explore different foods from around the world. Racism exists in words like “your food looks gross,” “it smells weird,” and “why would you eat that?” I want to expose children to different cultures and foods. Encouraging dialogue, community and acceptance
