Annabelle is extremely close to her parents, and she befriends her neighbor named Toby. Toby is an older gentlemen who fought in World War I and World War II. Because of fighting in the war, it has left Toby a troubled man. Betty, Annabelle's bully, was sent to live with her grandparents after being abandoned by her own parents for some unknown reason. Betty gets joy off of picking on other people, especially when it comes to Annabelle. One day, Betty turns up missing, and her disappearance is blamed on Toby.
