Names Matter

When writing about Native Americans or Indigenous people as a collective, use capital letters for the first letters. When talking about a specific Nation, it is always appropriate to use tribal nation names like Salish, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Quinnipiac, etc.

Use the Present Tense

Using the present tense lets your classmates, parents, and teachers know that Indigenous people are contemporary and relevant; using the past tense implies that cultures no longer exist. When talking about historical events, try to use dates.
