Article: The Hexagon, the Solstice, and the Kiva by Chris Hardaker.

https://www.earthmeasure.com/pdf/HexagonSolstice.pdf

This article details fascinating findings from native drawings that connect geometrical ideas to tracking the seasons. It could be used when discussing angles in shapes and using a protractor to measure angles. Teaching about how ancient societies used math for practical reasons is a powerful lesson for students today.

If I were to use this activity I would extend the math concepts to include other shapes within the flag, and perhaps use it as a scale activity, where students would draw a smaller replica of the flag and calculate the scale factor from their replica to typical flag dimensions.

Many students will be excited to include music, especially hip-hip or rap from their culture, into math. A great follow up activity to this video would be having students write their own rap or poem about a topic in geometry.

The best math standards to connect to this lesson would be scale, as students could draw a small version of their town or school based on a scale factor to the actual thing.

Since math is one of the hardest subjects to find multicultural resources for, this article helps teachers think about the various ways that they can make their classrooms and curriculum more culturally responsive and inclusive for their students.

Lesson Plan: Star Navigation - Explorations into Angles and Measurement

https://www.uaf.edu/mcc/files/modules/StarNav.pdf

This lesson plan comes from the University of Alaska Fairbanks' collection of lesson plans titled "Math in a Cultural Context". The University partnered with the local Yup'ik Native American tribe to connect math concepts to the culture and history of the tribe. This lesson would fit well into the geometry unit, as it discusses the basics of angles and measurement, which it connects to the Yup'ik people's stargazing.
