1. Big Evolution

• The first floppy disk was developed by IBM in the late 1960s. It was 8 inches in diameter and made of a flexible magnetic material encased in a plastic shell.

• These early floppy disks had a storage capacity of around 80 kilobytes (KB) to 1.2 megabytes (MB).

• In the mid-1970s, IBM introduced the 5.25-inch floppy disk, which became the standard for personal computers in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s.

• The 5.25-inch floppy disks initially had a storage capacity of about 360 KB, but this later increased to 1.2 MB

• In the late Late 1980s - Early 2000s: An enhanced version of the 3.5-inch floppy disk, known as High-Density (HD) floppy, was introduced, which increased the storage capacity to 2.88 MB (although this was not as widely adopted).

• Finally, As technology advanced, other storage media like CD-ROMs, ZIP drives, and eventually USB drives offered much larger storage capacities and faster data transfer rates. This led to the decline and got the obsolescence of floppy disks.

2. Handling changes

• The earliest floppy disks were large, measuring 8 inches in diameter. They were housed in a flexible plastic sleeve with a metal jacket to protect the magnetic medium

• The 5.25-inch floppy disk was introduced with a smaller, more manageable form factor

• The 3.5-inch floppy disk was even smaller and more durable than its predecessors

• The locking mechanisms on 3.5-inch floppy disks were designed to prevent accidental overwriting or erasure

• As technology advanced, manufacturers were able to increase the storage capacity of floppy disks while maintaining the 3.5-inch form factor. This was achieved through improvements in magnetic recording techniques.

• Some later 3.5-inch floppy disks included additional labels and notches to provide information about the disk's capacity, compatibility, and write-protection status.

• These changes in design and handling over time reflected advancements in manufacturing technology, materials, and engineering, ultimately making floppy disks more convenient and reliable for users.

3. Talking about the floppy disk uses:

• This artefact had used for: Data storage transfer, Operating system installation, Software distribution, Backups and archiving, Data recovery, File transfer between PCs, Gaming, Educational Software, Boot Disk for trobleshooting, etc.

• It's important to note that as technology advanced, floppy disks were gradually replaced by more efficient and capacious storage media like CD-ROMs, USB drives, external hard drives, and cloud storage. However, during their prime, floppy disks were an essential part of the computing experience.
