This model could be used with any instructional model, but most closely relates to Independent Study and Indirect Instruction. It could also be used in conjunction with Direct Instruction. The instructional model will really depend on the types of tasks students complete at various stations.

What qualifies Station Rotation as a blended model is when at least one station involves student-led online learning. By definition, the model allows students to rotate through stations on a fixed schedule, typically established by the teacher.

Data is constantly tracked during the Station Rotation model. A pretest can help place students in appropriate groups and at appropriate stations. While learning is occurring, teachers must monitor whether students are understanding, and redirect learning as needed. A post test will show whether students have mastered the skill, or if more work is needed.

It utilizes both a Direct and Indirect approach to teaching.

Assessment of learning can be derived in different ways: through direct instruction and student participation, or through computer learning systems that present students with learning material at the pace they need.
