This is the CUTEST book about a little fish who steals a hat from a bigger fish. It follows the little fish through the ocean on his journey to hide from the bigger fish because after all ... he will never know WHO took it. This book would be interesting for kids who like short and sweet books, or students on a lower reading level since there are not many words on each page. I could use this book to teach young readers (K-2nd) about expression and feelings while reading based off the fish's actions throughout.

Genre: Fiction

When Bruce gets home from a southern migration trip with his goslings, he is tired. He is grumpy. And he is definitely not in the mood to share his home with the trio of mice who have turned his den into a hotel. There's a possum pillow fight wreaking havoc in one room, a fox luring guests into a stew in the kitchen, and a snuggly crew of critters hogging the bed. Bruce growls and grumbles and tries to throw them all out, but the entrepreneurial mice just can't take a hint. Bruce is in a little over his head, especially once the goslings join the staff. Will this grumpy bear ever get his quiet, peaceful den back to himself? This book can be used to talk about character traits and personification.
Genre: Fiction

Every year, people ask Groundhog the same, boring old question. Is spring around the corner? Or are we doomed to more winter? Sure, they care about his shadow, but what about him and his interests? He's had enough! Groundhog packs his bags and sets out for a much-needed vacation. Now the town is holding auditions to find someone to fill his spot. None of the animals seem right for the job, though. Not Elephant, not Ostrich, and most certainly not Puppy! No one has Groundhog's flair for the dramatic, but is it too late to woo him back into the spotlight? This book can be used in the classroom around groundhogs day as a fun read for all ages of students.
Genre: Fiction

This adorable book is about two male penguins in a New York Zoo who just want a family like every other penguin around them. It follows them on their journey of becoming parents, even though at first they had no luck. Unlike other families around them, the two were unable to harbor a child. One day, the zoo keeper noticed the two penguins trying to hatch a rock (since they so badly wanted a baby) so he brought them a real egg that needed to be taken care of since it had no parents to keep it warm. This sweet little egg turned into their daughter, Tango, and the rest is history! This book might be hard to use in the classroom, since the main characters are two male penguins and some parents might have a problem with their children reading a story that contains a different type of family. However, if used in the classroom, it can be used to talk about as a casual read aloud to talk about family and connection.
Genre: Fiction

This book tells the story of a little girl in Harlem in the year 1939. One night, up on "tar beach," the rooftop of her family's apartment building, her dream comes true. The stars lift her up, and she flies over the city. She claims the buildings as her own, even the union building, so her father won't have to worry anymore about not being allowed to join just because his father was not a member. This book shares a very real story of a struggling family. It can be used to teach about diversity, and how each family goes through different things in their homes. It can also be used to talk about metaphors and similes since there are a lot throughout this text.
Genre: Realistic Fiction
