Dear Madam, 
 
I have no idea when you will be receiving this letter, but I thought I'd update you on how things are going here in Gettysburg. Yesterday I got shot in the palm of my left hand. We are lucky though, because if it had hit anywhere else, I would have probably been long gone by now. Please tell the kids that I love them and hope to see them again as soon as possible! I'm sorry to have left the house in such urgency. This battle is, by far, the hardest one I've witnessed yet. Our neighbor, Tom didn't make it, but uncle Hank did. Hope and faith are starting to fade after we've lost so many of our strong men.. The best you can do is pray for me and wish me luck. I need to go back to the field.. Time is running out. Please write me back whenever you find the time to.
