Frayn creates a serious tone when Mrs Hayward questions their whereabouts and what they were doing. Keith's mother ask whether "something mysterious" was "going on". Mrs Hayward questions what Keith and Stephen were up to. Mrs Hayward is suspicious of what they were doing due to the fact she utilizes the word "mysterious". This word illustrates that there is a atmosphere of strangeness and secrecy. Keith's mother asks "something i'm not supposed to know about?" Keith and Stephen were spying on Mrs Hayward this whole time and now of all of sudden she is asking about it. This causes a lot of suspense and tension in the atmosphere.

Frayn creates a sense of anticipation by the constant change of pace when Stephen and Keith continue spying on Mrs. Hayward. After they lose sight of her when trying to hide behind various objects, they "look right towards the the station and the golf course..." uses ellipsis to change the pace of the paragraph, thus creating suspense of what must come after the sentence. The extended use of ellipsis continued throughout the scene builds anticipation of what will come next and when they will locate Mrs. Hayward. Also, the sentence ends with a trail of uncontinued thoughts, where the reader wants to know more than what is written, but cannot until the point is stated later in the book. Furthermore, the use of short sentences, such as "No." also help alter the pace of the scene, as it creates a natural pause after the sentence due to its length. Short sentences get straight to the point and allow the reader to understand and remember that Mrs. Hayward cannot be found.
Frayn also creates apprehension by the sudden alertness of Mrs. Hayward on Stephen and Keith, and what they have up to. When the boys face Mrs. Hayward. Stephen states that he sees Keith and that "he's shaken", which shows the agitation both the boys felt, when they

Frayn intensifies the situation by indirectly revealing the reader about the whereabouts of Mrs. Hayward. While reading through the chapter we are indirectly informed by the author that since Keith and his family are wealthy and high status and Stephen is questioning why would she know that "kind of people". This suggests that Keith and Stephen are questioning her actions because they are confused about her trips and why she carries a fruit basket every time she goes out. In addition to this, every time they spy on Mrs. Hayward they somehow lose her. This emphasizes the idea that Mrs. Hayward is actually a spy and that she is trained to secretly go places without getting caught or followed as she "disappeared" according to the boys. This creates an extraordinary atmosphere to the reader and to Stephen and Keith as they suspect Mrs. Hayward’s actions and proceed to spy and "investigate" the situation like it is their duty.

Frayn creates pressure and hesitation building up to finding Mrs. Hayward by showing the struggle Keith and Stephen are going through to find her. He also shows how the boys use their imagination and their own prespective to spy on her. “struggling to find the one familiar detail” this quote means the boys are trying their best to find her and going through every detail. it suggests

.it makes the audience feel the struggle the boys are going through .This shows how the author is trying to potray the boys and their child perspective.

Fryan creates anxiety as the boys pass in front of Auntie dee house, because mrs hayward was in auntie dees house but the boys thought she was in a secret pathway. " we pass, and keiths mother emerges." this means the boys were not expecting her to be their so they were in shock and
"so what have you two been up to all morning?" this shows how mrs haward is speaking in a serious tone "glances at us sharply" this shows that she is suspicious and thinks the boys are hiding something from her.

Frayn creates suspense and tension throughout the extract as there is a serious and nervous tone when they are looking for Keith mother. When Stephen was looking for Keith mother he's "struggling to find the one familiar detail we're looking for ... I cant see it". The use of the ellipses is used to pause the scene to show disapproval which would generate tension as Stephen couldn't find it which will show how nervous and in russ as he ignored the things that he usually doesn't. This illustrates tension in the extract because it would show how Stephen is putting himself in a nervous mood just so he can find Keith, mother.

Frayn intensifies the mood with Miss Hayward as she questions
