I chose this book for my student because it is a beautiful and inspiring cultural book about a woman's journey to America. This woman came from Mexico to America with her young son not knowing the English language. She felt lost and alone until she discovered a library. She brought her son to the library with her and was amazed that she was able to look through these books and even take them home at no cost. She eventually learned the English language through books. I think this would be great for my student because he is Hispanic and his grandparents are immigrants from South America. His grandfather actually came to this country not knowing English either and had to learn himself through social interactions with others. I think he would really enjoy to learn about others journeys to America especially when it involves books and the library which my student has expressed how much he loves going to the library before.

I chose this book as an informational book because it really shows the reader a personal experience about what refugee families can go through when migrating to America. The book is told by a child, HÃ, who has only known Saigon her whole life. Due to the Vietnam war, her and her family must flee to America. She tells the reader all about the hardships she went through and how different the people, the food, and the environment is. I think this would be a great book for my student to read because it will challenge his vocabulary as well as inform him about what other people can go through when immigrating to America.

Today I feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day By Jamie Lee Curtis

I chose this book because it was one of my favorites as a kid. I personally feel like it has no age limit. It is a book that tells the reader that it is okay to not be okay sometimes. It is okay to feel happy, excited, or even sad, mad, or confused; even if you have no explanation as to why you feel that way. I think it would be great for my student so he knows that the way he feels does not always need an explanation. Sometimes you just feel a certain type of way and that is okay. I feel like this book is something that is so important for any child to know because sometimes it is hard to understand their mood but they should always know that how they feel is important and they should not have to explain why they are having those feelings.
