A salamander is a kind of amphibian that was once thought to be able to endure fire.
Fire=important part of the story. In Fahrenheit 451, the hearth is symbolic because it symbolizes comfort in fires (being a fire man means to burn books in the novel). The salamander symbolizes invoking all of these unnecessary fires

A hearth is the floor of a fireplace while a Salamander is a lizard like amphibian with an elongated body and tail and short limbs. In the story the hearth is refereed to the symbol of home, as a gathering place and a source of warmth. The significance of this is because barely any of this houses have warmth and love. They just watch TV and all their home is, is talking to the TV walls. The salamander is a creature that was once believed to live in a fire without being damaged by it. It is a symbol for the fireman. But the fireman wear the salamander on their uniforms because they start fire and live with themselves because they think it is normal.Although Montage is damaged by it because he doesn't even know if he is happy any more.

I think that the hearth and the salamander are symbolically referred to in the story by putting the salamander on montage uniform and the hearth represents the homes that are burned or about to be burned. But quite literally, a hearth is a semi aquatic amphibian with sensitive skin and a magnitude of short limbs excluding its tail.

Salamander- Salamanders are a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance, with slender bodies, blunt snouts, short limbs projecting at right angles to the body, and the presence of a tail in both larvae and adults. All present-day salamander families are grouped together under the order Urodela.
Hearth - In historic and modern usage, a hearth is a brick- or stone-lined fireplace, with or without an oven, used for heating and originally also used for cooking food.
The hearth and a salamander is a symbol on the firemen's jackets. It represents the pleasure to burn. The hearth is a symbol of the houses they burn.

A hearth is "the brick under or in front of a fireplace", and a salamander is "a mythical being able to endure fire without being harmed". Symbolically, the "hearth" is the houses the firemen burn. The houses and books turn into a fiery furnace at the salamander's (also known as the firemen's) doing. The salamander represents the firemen because the mythical salamander is a fireproof being, a being unharmed by fire. While the firemen can be burnt by the fires, they usually are emotionally unaffected.

The salamander symbolizes his work, because the salamander is a symbol of firemen. Guy also calls his truck a salamander.

In the story, the hearth is the fireplace of a home and the salamander is the official symbol of the firemen. I believe the hearth refers to the brokenness of Montag's home. He has a room full of televisions and his wife is always hypnotized by them. His home life was ordinary for his time, but the reader can see how different and strange it really is. The salamander is a symbol of death by fire. Since the firemen do not put out fires, they are believed to represent a "fire lizard" or salamander. These mythical "fire lizards" can endure fires.
