As of November, our class has prior experience to learning about letter formation, sight words, and what is a sentence. The students are still using my examples of writing as a model before being able to independently write their own sentences. We practice every week prior sight words, as well as the new ones. They also understand that sentences have spaces in between words.

Whether they speak in English or Spanish, my students are able to verbally communicate. A majority of my students have prior school experience where they were exposed to classroom structure, academic activities, and whole group instruction. My students come from a community that has close ties to each other and from big families, many live with multiple generations (grandparents or even great grandparents). My students understand structured games/activities that involve turn taking or sharing.

A majority of the students understand the purpose of a book is to tell a story. Many of the students came into Kindergarten knowing stories and/or characters from books. My class enjoys nursery rhymes, songs, and dances. They are interested in things they can move and dance to and singing helps keep engagement and retain the memory. Our sentence writing will include common words or objects they understand. During writing lessons, students enjoy the drawing aspect and unleashing their creativity.

The beginning of the lesson will hook in the students with an engaging alphabet video they can follow along to. We use the Promethean board to display videos as well as connect to my document camera to model what I am doing with my paper. Once the lesson is complete we will be able to have an intervention time where I can pull a group of students to do a mini lesson after the results of the informal assessment and the majority of the class will use their tablets for Smarty Ants, which is a phonics learning platform that provides individualized instruction based on their diagnostic and passing of lessons.
