“Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham.” (Lee 20).

Reputation is a way of life in Maycomb. Everyone knows everything about everyone from their last name because it holds a reputation. Miss Caroline being new- has no idea. The reputation of a Cunningham is that they’re the poorest family in Maycomb. They never take what they cannot pay back & if they do they pay their debts with wood, nuts, & potatoes. Reputations can affect the people in a bad or good way & depending on their actions. Example: the Ewells have a bad reputation and they live up to it, Boo Radley has a bad reputation but he doesn’t live up to it, it’s just rumors. The way they portray themselves through their actions bounces back on their reputation.

They never took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have." (Lee 20) This highlights the reputation the Cunninghams have for never taking any sort of gift or item that they can't repay. It's possible to infer that they're reputable for it because Scout spoke about it as if everybody knew, which nobody in the classroom said anything about not knowing.

It’s about time you found out it’s because he lets you”(Lee 104).
This quote demonstrates how Scout’s innocence is broken because she found out that Atticus has been letting her win the whole time. The reader can understand that Scout feels like life is unfair because she didn’t know Atticus was “cool” or did things other than being a lawyer. She realizes that there’s more about her father that she doesn’t know about.

“For a number of reasons,” said Atticus. “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (Lee 78)

Atticus's reputation- he is known to be a morally upright man with integrity (moral backbone of the story) who fights with his head and will stand up for his principles & beliefs. Here, Scout tells Atticus what Cecil told her & asks why Atticus took the case. Atticus knows Tom is innocent, if he didn't defend him against a racist, unjustified community that would be morally wrong. "if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town" Atticus can't go against his conscience and feels obligated to do the right thing, which is why he gallantly defends Tom Robinson. "I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” Atticus is such an ideal father because he strives to teach by example, if he didn't take the case, what would this show his kids? He would be hypocritical, it would go against everything he believes in. He doesn't simply tell them to live those morals because they will be better people; he lives those morals himself because he believes in the hope to make the world a more just place. This defines Atticus's character. "I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature" Atticus recognizes Tom's case as an imperative component of how his minuscule town will be commemorated, and he wants no part in going down in history as one who devoted to prejudice and close-mindedness.
