In the rising action of the short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," the main character, Montresor, tricks his friend Fortunato into following Montresor into his catacombs. When Montresor meets Fortunato at the carnival, Montresor immediately mentions that he may have overpaid for some Amontillado, a type of wine, then perking Fortunato's interest because he is a connoisseur of wine. Montresor then uses reverse psychology to further ensure that Fortunato follows Montresor into the vaults. As they walk further down, Montresor talks more about his family to Fortunato and also says that his family motto is, "Nemo me impune lacessit," which means, "Nobody attacks me without punishment," forshadowing what will come. Since the exposition of the short story had Montresor aiming for revenge, that is what is being foreshadowed in the rising action.

One of the quotes we found significant was on page 214, "A human foot d'or, in a field azure the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are embedded in the heel." This quote is Montresor's coat of arms and is significant because is implies his motivation to kill Fortunato out of revenge.

Another quote that was also mentioned on page 214 was, "'I shall not die of a cough.'" This quote is a significant to the rising action of the story because it foreshadows what will happen. It builds up the climax because the readers know what Fortunato doesn't.

A symbol of "The Cask of Amontillado," would be Fortunato's bells. The bells symbolize Fortunato's death and each time they ring he is brought closer to it. The last time the bells ring is when Fortunato accepts his fate and that he is going to die.
