Loosely based on me and my friend of 12 years, this piece examines the deterioration of a childhood friendship as two girls who were once similar and tight-knit become different and estranged. In this piece, the two girls part ways without saying goodbye, letting go of the regret of not being able to reconcile that has been on their shoulders since the downfall of their friendship. However, they are constantly reminded that they will always be connected to one another; the girls will stare toward the same sun and the same sky no matter where they are on their journey. It's sort of like how they say that other dimensions exist all around us, but we don't have the ability to perceive them.” –Frances Ha

Loosely based on me and my friend of 12 years, this piece examines the deterioration of a childhood friendship as two girls who were once similar and tight-knit become different and estranged. My piece explores the power of a stare across the room, only, it is out of shame and regret of a doomed friendship instead of love for each other. As the two lock eyes for a sliver of a second, we can see the world melt into a haze around them as they are left to exist in an entirely different dimension of their own creation. But for them, they are weighed down by their sadness for something that could never be, and the eye contact is broken as quickly as it was made, leaving the two to realize just how distant their two worlds have become.

Through my personal experiences with anxiety, I’ve come to find that one of my most significant stressors is ineffective treatments for anxiety. In my experience amid a panic attack, handing somebody a stress ball and telling them to breathe slower is essentially a slap in the face. It’s puzzling how the stress ball has become the face of functional stress relievers and why they are marketed as a practical alternative to meditation, therapy, medication and other treatments for anxiety. Any artwork of a smiling ball is a fundamental object to create; however, I was determined to make mine unorthodox. The creation of this piece began similar to others in my portfolio by sketching the underlying figure (in this case was the stress ball). Then I started drawing the wooden panelling, which would eventually become the foreground. After that, I used an array of yellow oil paints to create depth and a 3D effect in the ball. Because I’m not very experienced with oil paints, there was a learning curve, but eventually, I was content with the outcome. Next, I painted the background blue and foreground beige and brown, respectively, with acrylic paints. Finally, I used acrylic paints to work in the finishing touches on the eyes and mouth of the ball and created a shadow under the object as a whole. ]]> 2020-06-02 19:54:24 UTC https://padlet.com/lauriegeddes4/uqds5liukv1pf97e/wish/607609949 Mountain Wildflowers https://padlet.com/lauriegeddes4/uqds5liukv1pf97e/wish/607613223 This piece was one of my final pieces in my AP Sustained Investigation which was inspired by my deep connection to the Pacific NorthWest Coast environment I grew up admiring. A few years ago my family and I hiked to Garibaldi lake and Panorama ridge. I was fascinated by the endless fields full of colourful wildflowers contrasted by the rough rocky terrain and towering mountains. Through this piece I wanted to highlight the overlap between strength and delicacy in nature. I used photo transfer, acrylic paint, inks, charcoal and fine liners to bring out the vibrant colours and rugged shapes found in nature.

My goal was to capture the peace and seclusion found in nature which brings me calm and perspective. I also wanted to explore the sense of enchantment and mystery that silhouettes and shadows can create. I used layers of acrylic photo transfers, acrylic paint, inks and charcoal to create a dark first layer. Then I went in with white highlights and subtle hints of colour to bring out details within the scene. Through my personal experiences and observations, I’ve come to find that one of the leading causes of anxiety in people everywhere is relationship-based. As a result, the quarantine made piece I’ve created about relationship-based stress sheds light on the often paranoid interworkings of a romantic relationship. Like any other in my portfolio, this piece began by drawing the underlying figure in this case: the skeleton’s hands. Once that was finished, I painted two layers of acrylic paint around the outline of my sketch. Following this, I made use of various fine liners and sharpies to create a black border around the hands. Then, I created word art using a generator and begun pasting it where I saw fit on the hand and lower arms. Finally, I cut out several letters in times new roman font for the “Trust” text(s) and outlined the lettering in black acrylic paint.

This piece in particular was meant to depict parts of the human mentality with a juxtaposition of our connection to nature. The brain slowly changing into nerves then treetops are meant to signify this concept in relation to the labels around the outside of the brain. The main focal point of the piece, the red words “think about it” are meant to speak to our thoughtless actions. The brain is drawn in graphite with Prismacolor details and ink micron writing.

The juxtaposition between colour is meant to represent how some people or objects from our past can hold us back from living in colour, so to speak. The bird is meant to represent freedom in its ability to fly. In this piece, the bird was drawn in Prismacolor and the hands were done in graphite.

I already had a preconceived title in mind created by the artist "Coco Capitan" and made famous by the designer brand Gucci. "What are we Going to do with all of this future" This slogan perfectly fits my theme, and I wanted my piece to emanate this overwhelming question. The drawing aspect of the piece began shortly after the planning portion, I was looking for something to reference and came across the perfect blueprint for my work. I decided to experiment with charcoal, which is a medium unfamiliar to me. I worked to create different shades, and eventually created two separate sketches of the final product. But I was unhappy with the constant threat of smudging and how it would always find a way to destroy my work. I revised using charcoal and settled on using a pencil as my drawing medium. Upon completing the final shadows and blending the head and arms, I began working on the collage. I decided I wanted to use the text found inside university pamphlets as pieces in my collage. And so I asked several of my friends if they could help provide additional brochures. Thankfully and out of kindness, my friends offered several of their available booklets, and I began my work. I wanted the text to be a gradient (Dark to light), and so after countless hours of scouring the pamphlets for additional coloured and useful text's, the collage was finished. The title "What are We Going to do with all of this future" was placed in the center of the piece, and I was thrilled with the final outcome.

I came up with my sustained investigation question last year, when I was really involved with environmental problems across the world. I particularly focused on the loss of biodiversity in aquatic and land habitats. I wanted to portray this severe problem through my art work, so that's how I eventually came up with the pregnant ladies. My sustained investigation this year was based on how our memories and experiences as children develop the people we become. This painting was based on a photo of me and my sister at the Galapagos Islands, which we visited while living in Ecuador. In the image, I am five and she is seven, and we're seen running into the ocean. This trip is what helped me choose my theme, as it was a very important experience for me. Reflecting on it, the year that I spent living in Ecuador helped shape me into the person I am today. I mainly worked with watercolour pencils on Stonehenge paper. My sustained investigation this year was about the common phobias that many people around the world are experiencing. I was really curious about what phobias is and why almost everyone has some. A phobia is an irrational and extreme fear of a situation, living creature, object, and place. If someone has a phobia they tend to avoid it. In my piece, I chose to draw the fear of clowns, fear of heights, fear of needles and blood, fear of spiders, fear of drowning, fear of tight spaces, fear of falling, and fear of the unknown. Reflecting on my work, my pieces seem almost like they are a nightmare.
