P-2 - Digital Technologies

"Jellybean Maths" is a learning activity, where students collect and explore data through play. Within the activity, students calculate and tally the different combination of jellybean colours within their lolly bag and record their data in a table. As this activity was originally designed for the implementation of the Mathematics Curriculum, it explores mathematical concepts, such as number sense and predicting, however, through further adaptation, it would also effectively align with the Technologies Curriculum, building on students' Digital Technologies, Processes and Production skills.

Within Foundation to Year 2, students are required to “collect, explore and sort data, and use digital systems to present the data creatively”. As the activity, “Jellybean Maths”, already caters to the first part of the content descriptor, “collecting, exploring and sorting data”, an additional activity would need to be integrated to allow students the opportunity to present their data using digital systems. One way in which this could be achieved is through an activity that requires students to use digital technologies to record their data in a simple column graph or picture graph. "Graphing for kids" is one app that would be particularly effective for this task. This graphing app is an easy learning tool used to support students, as they use digital systems to present their data in a graph, thus, meeting the requirements of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies.

Curriculum links:

Collect, explore and sort data, and use digital systems to present the data creatively (ACTDIP003)
