At a young age scribbling is a way of saying "look at me", it is one way for a child to communicate, as they see adult do. Therefore, it is important to encourage children to scribble and even better to let them tell their scribble story.

Writing and scribbling were amongst the first tools that humanity had that enabled them to express themselves. the same goes for children. Their ability to scribble, to draw and later on to write helps them express themselves.

I think that beginning writing looks like scribble. At the beginning, there are lots of mistakes, but then, the lines add up to be more understandable. As a teacher it is my job to make sure the kids don't fear making mistakes and learn from them.

I can learn from the story that a child should be proud of his drawings, even though they are full of scribbles. In fact, it's the role of parents and teachers to teach kids to accept their difference, their attempts to write and let them express themselves the way they know because one day the kids will grow up being great writers.

As a teacher, I look at third graders' different styles of writing letters and words. I usually correct pupils' writing when it comes to the form of letters when the letters or words cannot be recognized. However, when I see the pupils write letters in large size, very small size, or even cross the lines in their notebook, I ignore it because this is their way to leave their unique mark.

In every process we learn new things not only at school, we try and try and fail or we find different way, and the best way is to do what we feel is suitable for us. We are not supposed to satisfy everyone. Nobody can say that he is the best, we should let the others see what we are not to change inorder to be like them, it's our personality and we believe in it, if we want to change it's our decision. It's important to have self confidence of our selves. We have to undertand the positive things in us not change them and if we want to change we need to believe in that.

I love the story about scribble because it's message is much deeper than just the value of a scribble. This story talks about self expression. It teaches a very important message about social acceptance and breaking out of rigid social norms to see the individual as someone with unique strengths. in relation to teaching children how to write, I think this means reading what they are trying to say - reading for content - and not just getting carried away with form. I realy learned how to express myself in writing for the first time when an unforgettable teacher had us keep writing journals where we coul scribble our thoughts freely without worrying about formalities. She would respond to the content, and that was all the motivation we needed to write some more. Once a child gains confidence expressing themselves in writing, you can teach form and it will come naturally. learning how to write correctly in a very long and gradual process, but expressing one's thoughts in writing should be encouraged from the start. It's the only way to really motivate a child to write.

What a great story. It really does make you think about the way children see reality vs. the way adults do. in my opinion this is a good reminder of a few things: different doesn't mean "bad' and we should make sure we not only explain that to students but also remind ourselves . this has to do with kids behavior, attitude etc.

another thing is that sometimes a child's creativity seems too much for adults. teacher who are used to having things done ONLY their way, might try to "quiet down" a students way of thinking or his/her expression.

It's important to always remember to try other ways to reach our students, especially young learners of EFL whose attitude towards the language is being set in these early school years.

As an English teacher, I view the "scribble" not as a careless act, but as an essential and positive first stage in the literacy process. The scribble is the vital pre-writing phase where students rapidly capture their initial ideas, thoughts, and stories without the pressure of spelling or neatness, thereby prioritizing content over form. Furthermore, using a quick sketch—a visual scribble—helps students create powerful mental connections between new vocabulary and a picture, making learning fun and highly effective for comprehension and memory. We celebrate the scribble because every successful piece of writing begins with that energetic, unpolished start, proving that the raw material of creativity is always valued in our classroom.

From the story “Scribble,” we learn that creativity often begins in simple, imperfect ways, and that even something that looks messy at first can grow into something meaningful when it’s encouraged. As a teacher, this story reminds me that my students, like scribbles, may start with rough ideas, unique expressions, or unconventional ways of thinking, and it is my role to see the potential in their early attempts. By creating a classroom environment where mistakes are welcomed and imagination is valued, I can help students feel safe to explore, create, and develop confidence. “Scribble” teaches me to look beyond the surface, appreciate every child’s individuality, and support their growth with patience and openness.

Teaching Young Writers

As a teacher of young writers, I see "I’m Not Just a Scribble" as a perfect lesson in how to build a child's confidence. Here is how I personally connect with this story:

What the Story Teaches Me

The biggest lesson I take away is that there is no such thing as "bad" writing in my classroom. In the story, the other drawings are mean to Scribble because he doesn't look like them. This reminds me that young children are often afraid to write because they think their work looks "messy" compared to a book or a teacher's handwriting.

I learn that my job is to help children see that their messy lines are actually the start of something great. When Scribble helps the others create "amazing art," it shows me that when we stop worrying about being perfect, we actually become more creative.

How I Relate to the Story as a Teacher

I am the protector of the "Scribble": When a student shows me a page of tangled lines and says, "This is a story about my dog," I don't see a mess. I see a writer. Like Scribble, I want to stand up for the idea that every mark on the page has meaning.

I use it to teach feelings: I love how the book connects colors to emotions. As a teacher, I can use this to help my students when they are stuck. If a child is too shy to write words, I can ask them, "What color is your scribble today?" It gives us a way to talk before they even know their ABCs.

I focus on inclusion: This story reminds me to create a classroom where students cheer for each other. I want my students to be like the drawings at the end of the book—happy to work together, even if everyone’s "scribbles" look different.

My Goal

This book reminds me that my students are "not just a scribble." They are authors in training. My goal is to make sure they feel safe enough to pick up a crayon and start, without being afraid of making a mistake.

The story of "Just a Scribble" taught me that we should never look at a student’s work as "just" a mistake or a mess. For a young learner, that scribble is their first step in expressing a big idea. It shows that the desire to communicate comes before the ability to write perfectly.

As a teacher, this relates to me because it reminds me to focus on the student's intent and effort first. Instead of only looking for correct spelling or neat letters, I should encourage my students to share their ideas. By valuing their "scribbles," I help them build the confidence they need to become real writers.

“Just a Scribble” highlights how something small and seemingly meaningless can hold great value when it is seen with imagination, patience, and encouragement. The story reminds us that growth often begins with something simple, and that confidence develops when someone believes in us.

As a teacher, “Scribble” relates to how I view my students. Sometimes a student’s work, behavior, or effort may seem minimal or unfocused at first, but with the right guidance and positive reinforcement, it can develop into something meaningful. It represents their thoughts and their use of different writing tools, such as pens, pencils, and colors. As a teacher, I relate to it in a few ways. First, allow pupils to scribble, use their imagination, and practice using stationery. Second, it encourages confidence. When students start writing and forming letters, they need to feel encouraged and confident, since English is different than their L1. Also, it can be a great practice. The more they practice, the better they will become.

I have a baby daughter, Ayala, just three years old. Thiscute story reminds me of her attempt to create inputs, which directly expresses her inner thoughts. It may relate to creation, a message or an attempt to copy a better drawing. It's a process which requires consistency, feedback and creativity. Writing letters, in addition to practice drawing, could be initiated at her young age.

Scribbling is toddlersw first step toward writing and literacy. Their random marks develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They promote joy, a feeling of independence and sensitivity to color and form. Young children discover that their physical movements have an impact. They also copy adults' writing.

I think the scribbling picture is the first attempt at writing. Before children can write letters or words, they usually start by making random marks and scribbles. It's the first step toward learning how to write.

“Just a Scribble” reminds me that children’s learning often begins in simple and messy ways. A scribble may look small, but for a child, it can be a real message, a story, or an idea.

As a teacher, I have learned to respect early attempts and not rush children to be perfect. I should give them time, encouragement, and space to express themselves. Every small mark can be the beginning of confidence, creativity, and writing.

As an English teacher, I see scribbling as much more than random marks on paper. It is an important and valuable first step in the journey toward literacy. During this pre-writing stage, students can freely express their ideas, thoughts, and stories without worrying about spelling, grammar, or neat handwriting. This allows them to focus on creativity and communication rather than perfection.

In addition, creating quick visual sketches or scribbles helps students build meaningful connections between new vocabulary and images. This approach makes learning more enjoyable while improving understanding, memory, and long-term retention.

We celebrate every scribble because it represents the beginning of a student's writing journey. Every great piece of writing starts with a simple idea, reminding us that creativity always comes before perfection.
