Smiling to herself, she was thinking: How absurdly funny, me taking orders from this girl like a servant" (9). Millicent finds it amusing that she has to do Bev's chores to be a part of the sorority.

Millicent questioning what she has to do to join the sorority is an example of internal conflict because she starts to wonder if the sorority is really good after finding out all the strange tasks she has to do. Millicent starts thinking of the sorority as a joke, feeling like a servant instead of an independent person.

"There was something about her tone that annoyed Millicent. It was almost malicious. And there was an unpleasant anonymity about the label "gopher," even if that was what they always called the girls being initiated. It was degrading, like being given a number" (Plath 9). Beverly, her older sister in the sorority, called her a gopher and started to order her around

This quote portrays the external conflict of the story because it shows her problems with another person. Even though the older sisters in the sororities call their little sisters "gophers" it made Millicent feel like a nobody. Beverly being unnecessarily rude to Millicent is an example of an external conflict in the story. Millicent wanted to join the sorority, but because Beverly is treating her badly, she's now having second thoughts about joining it.
