As far as I know this isn't any special landmark, I just found the image a little haunting. In the context of this class, I really like the idea of a path to somewhere that no longer exists, as I feel like it poetically symbolizes our goal as historians

Agnaou Gate is one of Marrakesh's most famous historical landmarks. The gate was constructed in the 12th century and separates the royal kasbah from the general city. I chose this image because I liked the architectural design, and found it familiar. I have definitely seen images of this gate before but didn't know it was in Marrakesh.

This is an image of the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque located near the Zagros Mountains. I was torn between including a picture of the actual mountains or of this Mosque, but decided to include the mosque as I feel it demonstrates intentional beauty, beauty that western media does not commonly associate with middle eastern countries.

Also known as the Ortaköy Mosque, the Büyük Mecidiye sits on the Bosphorus and is one of the most visited sites on the Bosphorus. I picked this landmark because I found the architecture unusual for a mosque, and thought perhaps there was a story behind it.

Fustat was the first Capital of Egypt under Muslim rule. Also called old Cairo, Fustat is the center/historic core of Cairo. Fustat was ruled by the Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, & Fatimid Caliphates. I hope this image provides an accurate rendition of Fustat as it once was.

This is a photo of the Kaaba in Mecca circa 1887. I chose this image because Mecca is located within the Najd region of Saudi Arabia & I had never seen a historical image of Mecca. The Najd region generally refers to the middle area of Saudi Arabia and was at one point a kingdom.

I picked this image because I found it pretty and it did not match the image my mind generated. I was expecting it to be more deserty or mountainous. I should really know more about this region since my family is Basque.

This statue is of Islom Karimov, the 'first' President of Uzbekistan actually serving when Uzbekistan won its independence. He served as the last First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan & continued to serve as the President of Uzbekistan until he died in 2016. This statue is located outside the Ak Saroy, meaning White Palace, and closely resembles the White House. I picked this landmark because, much like the Mosque in the Zagros Mountains, middle easter countries are rarely given credit for western 'successes' like democracy.
