I chose the "5 Keys to Successful Social and Emotional Learning", this video broke down the essentials of SEL and how it impacts students beyond just the classroom level. What resonated with me was that SEL can also be utilized as a form of academic intervention. Hello everyone! my name is Kateema Bourne. I am currently the Art/Music Cluster Teacher for grades K-3 at Icahn Charter school 4. I worked various roles working with students and I can tell you that these past two years have been challenging due to the pandemic. I believe that the pandemic has affected the teachers but has greatly impacted our students in many ways. For example, a lot of students have a hard time staying on task, calmly socializing with others, or just having the patience to learn. However, I think having SEL as part of the classroom more often will be essential to help correct some of the behaviors within the classroom setting. I am very interested to learn more and how I can implement this into my classes!

I decided to become a teacher when I took an education class as an elective in my third year of college.  It required field work in a fifth grade classroom. I was hooked. I wasn’t sure about that age group.  I realized fifth grade  wasn’t for me when I started spending days off from school with a friend and her first grade class.
