This is shown through the changes that occur in the portrait. It starts to become old and ugly, just like his soul does in real life. As shown in the photo the portrait almost became unrecognizable. He has completely morphed into a different person. He is basically no longer human. The character we knew at the beginning of the book is no longer present. By now he has even come to the point of murdering his friend Basil.
