Culture as a Central Role

In chapter 7 Billings shares with us ways teachers can be motivated and ways to change teaching practices. On of the ones she mentions is that teacher candidates should be provided educational experiences that help teachers understand the central role of culture. Teachers need to understand that culture isn't a term that is easily defined. It is the center of who we are.

Telling Isn't Teaching

In chapter 7 Billings observes a few teachers. One of the teachers she observed was a teacher named Mr. Walsh. Mr. Walsh had a plan in place that didn't get taught the way he had intended it to be. It went off track. When Billings asked him what he taught, he told her what he intended to teach, and she corrected him and said although it's what he intended, it's not what he taught. Just because you have plans, it doesn't mean your points are always going to reach. You have to evaluate how well your plans are carried and what your students took from them.

Billings suggest that one of the best ways to become a better teacher is to observe great teachers. When we go into classrooms of culturally relevant teachers, we can take away their practices and try to implement them into our own classrooms. Find mentors for yourself that will help you become a better teacher.

She tells us one of the things she intended to do with the interviews with teachers was to simply have good conversations that helped us see real life examples of what a culturally relevant teacher is like.

I wanted to tie this whole book together by connecting it to the overriding theme. We as teachers must learn how to be successful and reach all of our students. This happens through being culturally aware and responsive. This picture is to remind us that culture is always something we should be centered on celebrating.
