The first person to receive the 'Righteous Among The Nations' Award was Ludwig Wörl on March 19th 1963. Ludwig Wörl was a German citizen who was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp because he was informing people of the horrors of the camps through pamphlets. At the concentration camps, Ludwig acted as a nurse. He helped many patients by stealing medicine from Nazi soldiers and forging selection lists of people who would otherwise die in the gas chambers. Because of this, Ludwig was dismissed from his job as a nurse. Ludwig then advocated for Jews who were not properly treated and helped others escape from death marches.

Righteous Among the Nations was established in 1953, in Israel. It stands for all of those innocent Jews who died under injustice and cruelty, and for all of those who helped them get further in their lives and safety. The Nations recognizing those non-Jews who helped and sacrificed themselves for those who were hunted and killed. The museum for the Righteous is in Isreal, and tells the story of the lost and memorializes them. You can go and see rows and rows of trees planted, one for each of a non jew who helped. But there were criteria in order to become one of the Righteous Among the Nations. Criteria that proved who died a martyr and served for the greater good.

How To Qualify as a Righteous Among the Nations

Yad Vashem, the authoritarian moral for heroes and martyrs, laid out four essential rules. Number one, the individual must have been involved in helping free the Jews from death camps and deportation. Two, the individual must have tried to sacrifice or risk their life for a Jew or for the prospect and attempt to someone a person. Three, the rescuer must be invested and loyal to saving the Jews. And the forth, there must be testimony from the recused to prove that the individual helped. If all of the criteria are met, then then they receive the name "Righteous Among the Nations" and their name is added to the Wall of Honor in the Museum. Remarkably as of March 2025, 28,486 people have been awarded.

These people should be memorialized and never forgotten, as should the Jews. The Righteous Among the Nations have helped countless and will continue to make an impact.
