Russo is angry about the fact that the media and the public are not being very inclusive about the disease. He goes on and explains how this disease is portrayed as only affecting whites and heterosexuals. He is specifically angry because the media has ignored "specific homosexual content" Therefore, creating biases and not properly informing the people about the disease. If the media paints this picture of what a person with AIDS "should look like" that's erroneous this will make people have a wrong idea of the disease

Russo is most angry about how the media is more focused on the stories on AIDS instead of focusing on the heterosexual disease (HIV). Also the fact it took 8 years long makes it believe that the gay people have been fighting for so long. Towards the public, the gay community have basically been silenced, making people uneducated of the idea of homosexuality's. Making it seem like they weren't present or existent.

Russo does this to emphasize that AIDS is more than just a disease, but it is a form of division that separates those with AIDS to those without it. Russo initially mentions war as something that unites people fighting for a common cause, but because AIDS doesn't affect the majority population, most people don't care. This has the effect of marginalizing those with AIDS, hence why the epidemics is a "war that has divided us."

Russo compared the AIDS epidemic to a "war that has divided us" because it has separated the people who had aids as monsters and those without aids. They let the media stigmatize the disease and this was never destigmatized, the discrimination towards those with aids in minority groups, particularly the LGBTQ+. The stigma is what created the divide.

The author compares how the society and government do not care about making it a priority to solve the problem unless it includes them, those of the same color, those who looked like them, and who sounded like them. No one took AIDs seriously because those affected did not meet the criteria. They could not get people hired to check the drugs and took almost 18 months just for one reporter to write about it. However, with the Legionnaire's Disease the whole world knew about it and everyone ensured that it would be posted on all newspaper and all news channels.
