I also see how predator landlords strategize to take tenants to eviction court because they know that the majority of times tenants do not have legal representations. This will equal the playing field between tenants and landlords in evictions courts. According to statistics, Landlords 87% of the times have legal representation, compare to 7% of the times that low income tenants have legal representation in eviction proceedings. Tenants also experience landlord harassment and landlords get away with it. Predators landlords usually target the most bulrnable: the older folks, the low income, and the people who don't know their rights as tenants. The Right to council will also have an eduational component that would allow people like myself continue educating the public about their rights through workshops and seminars. In addition our community members struggle with illiteracy. I once completed a HS diploma with out knowing how to read or write. That was detrimental when I was attaining higher education and made it more difficult as an undocumented student. Now I see similar struggles in the community as I try to help tenants help themselves fill out forms, answer written notifications from their landlord, and to use technology. Lot's of our community members struggle with illiteracy. This make it hard for them to answer an eviction notice or to communicate in writing with their landlord or public officials. This is not something easy to accept.
