They also used techniques such as arches and domes to create a gorgeous architectural style that has been popular for many years. An obvious example of the beauty and strength of Roman buildings is the Colosseum.

One contribution of the Roman Empire was the language Latin, which is the basis for all Romance languages like Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, and Portuguese. Latin roots are also found in many English words.

Rome contributed greatly to the study of medicine. Galen, a doctor in the Roman empire, was especially influential. He made great leaps in the study of human anatomy, and example being that he proved that the arteries carried blood, not air, as was previously thought.

Rome's governmental system has a great impact on governments today. Their system of a Republic is used in many countries, notably the USA. Many of their legal values also influenced our government and legislation today.

The Emperor Constantine:

One famous and influential figure of the Roman empire was Constantine. Though he came after the empires famously split, he had a great impact, as he both moved the capital of the empire to Constantinople, in the eastern empire, and he made Christianity legal, which was the force that carried on much of the western Roman legacy.

Diocletian was another emperor who had a great impact on Rome. Due to Rome's many, many problems, he decided to split the empire in two, to reduce the responsibilities of each area. He also tried to slow inflation by freezing prices.

The Emperor Augustus:

Octavian (AKA Augustus) was a military leader, and later, an emperor whose reign began the 200 year period of peace and prosperity for the Roman empire, or the Pax Romana.
