In this heartfelt and powerful fiction text, written in free verse, you will follow Kek's journey from Africa to his new home in Minnesota as a Sudanese refugee.  In his new life on American soil, Kek learns the ins and outs of his new life in the "home of the brave."  He learns about snow and ice, washing machines and escalators, ketchup and cake.  I enjoyed this book as it made me realize how fortunate I am for the things and people I have in my life. Katherine Applegate helped me realize that Kek does not have the privileges that I have and I should be more grateful. For example, when he sits as his new desk, in his new school, he says, "I don't have the cattle for such a fine desk as this."  After realizing school is free, "his mouth will not stop smiling."
