No, I think that they really weren’t free. Yes, they were not slaves anymore but they didn't really have the privileges that White Americans had. And I think they were just called free. Like Black Codes, they couldn’t have a fire arm with them, couldn’t rent or keep a house, or no public meetings. It was basically you can’t do this, and you can’t do that. This was not fair at all. They were supposed to have freedom, do what they wanted to do in life that some couldn’t do some time ago. But they couldn’t because of rude rules. They should’ve been treated equally. All of this is not what the word free means.

No, I don’t think they were free. The black codes tried to restrict African Americans from, well, basically everything. They were still considered “free”, but were they really? They had no where as close to the amount of right that white people had. They had to take quizzes to “test” the knowledge that they knew they didn’t have. No one had taught them to read. No one taught them to write, or spell, or any of that stuff. So, no. I don’t think that they were actually free.

African-Americans were not free. They were legally “free” but they were also LEGALLY separate. Even though they had some access to resources they did not have when they were enslaved, there were still many instances in which they were not free (like the Black Codes). Also, many landowners found loopholes such as share cropping. Though African-Americans did work hard to find their own rights and constantly were fighting back against people oppressing them.

Fantastic. No. Not even after the entire Civil War were the African Americans free. Because of the Civil War, they were free. And being free meant not being enslaved. But that also meant they were unemployed and they also had to pay back the ex-slave owners. Since African Americans were in debt sharecropping was invented. And very few people benefited from that. Very sad.
