Editing is when an editor puts clips together to create multiple scenes for films and programmes. It allows the audience to follow the action, it also makes the audience feel like they are in two places at once as well as getting multiple view points.
When the editing pace is slowed down it creates a sense of tense and drama. Whereas fast/quick editing creates excitement for the audience.
In a horror film, editors will use longer clips and a slower pace of editing, this creates a sense of tension. An example of this would be 'Halloween'.
I have chosen this clip as there are slow cuts and a slow pace throughout the whole scene. This puts the reader on edge at all times throughout the film.
An example of a fast pace film would be action film. I have chosen a scene from 'fast and furious' this is because it is fast pace.

Camera editing is when the video is being edited whilst filming. For example, The Lumiere brothers shot on film. Films were edited in camera, which means the filmmaker has to shoot the footage in sequence, editing as they go along. Cuts will be made by simply making a stop to filming. In 1895 The Lumiere brothers were early pioneers of film making as they invented the Cinematograph which worked both as projector and camera.
Eisentien, a Russian filmmaker developed editing techniques further by the idea of a montage. A montage is where shots are put in a sequence. The film Rocky is an example of a film that uses 'Montage' editing as it shows the different ways both Rocky and Ivan Drago train.
DW Griffin was seen as an early Pioneer of the editing process. He developed the idea of putting together the different types of shots, angles and movements in order to give a film a sense of pace. DW Griffin used seamless editing which can also be known as invisible editing. This means the cut between shots matches the action. This technique is still relevant in TV today. For example 'The birth of a nation' from 1915 shows various shots from different camera angles and switching to different scenes at a fast pace.
Shot variation is a technique used in filming to create a sequence of a range of images using movement.
A wide shot is used to show the setting of where the particular scene is being shot. A long shot is usually used when a character is being introduced so you can get a full analysis of their image and body language. A medium shot is used when two character are in the same shot and/or having a conversation. An example of a film that shows these shots would be Fast and Furious 7. In the first 5 seconds of the end scene a wide shot is used to show the beach where all the characters are on. A long shot is used when it shows two of the characters on the beach and a medium shot is used when it shows the other characters having a conversation.
Analogue editing is a tape based video production which will then sync up with footage in digital editing. It is difficult to edit footage because a splicer is used to cut film and stick different scenes together and feed them through a projector.
Digital editing is when you use a computer with an editing software on to edit videos. This is much easier as your computer does most of the work for you. An example of a digital editing software would be Premier Pro, you can use this to edit any of your videos on a computer.

Seamless editing is where you join two clips together to create a smooth and neat transition into each other. By doing this it is hardly noticeable to anyone watching.
The 180 degrees rule is an imaginary line that works as a guide for where the camera should be placed. The camera should not cut from the side of this line to another. This enables the audience to visually connect with the movement on screen.
Cuts are used to show different perspectives of the action. The quicker the cuts are, the more intense and exciting it is for the audience.
A point of view shot is a camera angle that shows the audience what the character can see from their point of view. Using this camera angle is creative and makes it more interesting for the audience.
Shot Reverse shot is an editing technique where one character is talking to another character and they talk back. This technique is used to make the conversation between the two characters look seamless instead of panning back and forth which would make the film look unprofessional.
A Cutaway shot is an interruption In a scene of a film by editing in something else then is usually followed by the first shot.
A fade is a technique which is used to transition into another scene.
A dissolve is a gradual transition from one scene to another.
A wipe is another way of transitioning into another scene gradually, an example of a film that uses these transitions would be Star Wars.
Editing provides the audience with information of what is happening in the film, for example when two characters are having a conversation, editing is important so you can see both characters when talking to each other.
Editing is important in this clip from 'The silence of the Lambs' as it shows the two groups of police officers going into to houses, the editing shows a group of police officers breaking into the wrong house.
In this scene from 'Baby driver' it is edited to the rhythm of the music. It cuts to each person when the beat of the music changes. This engages the audience and makes the scene more fun and interesting.
Cutting to the beat is switching to different characters or scenes when the beat of the music changes. In this clip it shows cutting to the beat four times with the four different characters.
