Social forces are external factors that influence the design and implementation of educational curricula (Parkay et al., 2014, as cited in Martin, 2024). These forces include, but are not limited to, political, economic, cultural, social, and technological factors (Parkay et al., 2014, as cited in Martin, 2024). Social forces influence various aspects of life, such as education, family dynamics, and workplace environments.

Trinidad and Tobago is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-cultural society. The country is shaped by the historical influences of Africans, East Indians, Europeans, Chinese, and many other ethnic groups. This rich diversity impacts education, social interactions, and national identity, which makes cultural appreciation important in the classroom at all educational levels. The national curriculum of Trinidad and Tobago promotes ethnic and cultural appreciation in subjects such as Social Studies, which explores the history, traditions, and contributions of the different ethnic groups (Ministry of Education, 2013). Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) encourages classroom discussions on respect, tolerance, and identity (UNESCO, 2015). English Language Arts include stories, poetry, and folktales from different cultures, this fosters multicultural appreciation. Another subject area is Religious Education, which introduces students to Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam, as well as other belief systems. Many of the local stories that are sold throughout the country are tales that derive from different cultural and ethnic groups.

Many schools, including some denominational schools, celebrate cultural diversity through school activities. This is done by having a short program that is centered around the upcoming national holiday, for example, a school will have a Divali program where students will be allowed to dress in their cultural wear that is significant to that holiday. Foods related to that holiday will be served, such as roti, kurma, and more. Students will be exposed to the music and instruments associated with that religious group. The same is done for traditional holidays such as Carnival.

Many social factors influence how cultural diversity is promoted in the classroom (Ministry of Planning and Development, 2019). For example historical and colonial legacy, government policies and education reforms, religious influence, and migration and globalization (Ministry of Planning and Development, 2019).

References

Ministry of Education. Based on each scenario, students will discuss what they will do and why. This activity will be done in groups of three (3), with each group given a different scenario. For example, if a classmate is bullying another classmate, what will you do and why? this will later lead to a discussion on how individuals can influence each other positively or negatively.
