Age Group: 3-5 years old

This puppet play resource allows children to work on their literacy skills as they get to role-play different characters and come up with stories on their own. Older children can also be involved in drawing out different stick puppets characters of their choice to use in this resource.

This resource targets the child's speaking and listening skills in relation to the Literacy Continuum Process Model. Puppet play can be played individually, where they can come up with stories with the stick puppets, or played in pairs and small groups, where they can get to interact with others and work on their speaking and interacting skills.

McLain (1993) supports that children are active learners while parents play a role in facilitating their learning process while guiding them. The use of puppet play can help to stimulate oral communication with young children, which is beneficial for their literacy skills in listening, speaking, and interacting.

Literacy Board Game

Age Group: 4-6 years old

This resource is an open-ended activity that offers an opportunity for the preschoolers to work on their literacy skills as they come up with words that begin with the different letters.
Slightly different from what was mentioned in the video, there will be an additional deck of letter cards along with the sight words, where players pick a letter from the deck and form at least 2 words that begin with the letter before they roll the dice.

Relating to the Literacy Continuum Process Model, this resource works on the child's listening, interacting, and speaking skills, as they interact with their household members through this board game resource, listen to the words, and practice identifying and naming the words shown.

With support from Whorrall & Cabell (2015), the quality of language input in the preschooler's microsystem is crucial as it tends to play a part in affecting the development of their oral language skills.
Household members interact with the child daily. Young children tend to imitate how adults and caregivers speak. Hence adults need to be mindful of how they talk when the child is around.

* my favourite activity in this collection!

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This resource provides opportunities for the preschoolers to recognise the letters on the clothes pegs, as they have to match them to the correct letters on the paper plate.
Older children can even follow up the activity by coming up with words that begin with the letter shown on the clothes peg (e.g. letter e - elephant, egg, eggplant) and even forming words using the different letters clothes pegs.

In relation to the Literacy Continuum Process Model, this resource focuses on the child's reading and viewing skills, as they need to have the ability to recognise letters and manipulate with the resources provided.

With references to Özkür (2020), motor skills development is an essential component of encouraging preschool children's emergent literacy skills. The use of clothes pegs allows children to work on their fine motor skills as they have to go through the thought process of where they should place the clothes pegs.

This hospital in Singapore has a team of Speech-Language Therapists trained in different areas who will help assess, diagnose, treat and help infants up to adolescents with disorders or difficulties related to speaking, understanding, and using language effectively.

With individualised treatment plans and daily home programmes available, therapies are planned and revised according to each individual's needs, strengths and weaknesses.

In relation to the Literacy Continuum Process Model, listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing skills are involved. Every individual is different, and they require assistance and guidance in different areas.

According to Payne (2021), Early intervention can significantly improve a child's ability to learn new skills and improve their ability to speak, understand and use language effectively over time. Not only that, but early intervention also educates parents on appropriate strategies to take note of when teaching a child with difficulties. Parents of children with disabilities tend to need more support for their well-being.

Children can build their vocabulary through this meal time resource as they explore coming up with different words that rhyme.
Parents also play a huge part as they have to facilitate this activity and come up with questions for the child to answer. Not only it allows the child to work on their literacy skills, but it also benefits the parents as it strengthens their relationship by bonding through this meal-time resource.

Relating to the Literacy Continuum Process Model, this resource helps the children work on their listening and speaking skills and build on their phonological awareness as they have to come up with rhyming words that they know.

According to Fellowes & Oakley (2014), playing literacy activities that encourage verbal interaction between adults and children can help to strengthen their acquired knowledge. Children need to practice regularly to retain what they learned previously. Such literacy activities are engaging and beneficial for the child.
