After discussing what you have learned with another group member, answer the following question and place your response on the map on a location that you think best represents what you have learned today: Compare and contrast the Irish and East Asian motivations to migrate during the 19th and early 20th centuries. What were the impacts on these communities after they migrated?

Noah Teves
One of the main similarities between the Irish and Asian Migrations was the job opportunities. Both parties migrated to America in the hopes of finding new job opportunities, but were only able to find jobs with low wages and long hours. One of the main differences was the amount of racism that the Asians faced over the Irish. The Irish people also used potatoes as a primary food source, as it was easily obtained and nutritious. Overall, the impacts on these communities seemed to be the expansion of racism, and amount of diversity. As more Asians started to migrate to America, racism started to become more common, as the Americans viewed Asians very poorly.

Colin Devereux
While the Chinese migrated to America to obtain jobs, the Irish were attempting to evade a Famine. In America, there was a Chinese exclusion act, preventing Chines people from obtaining jobs, while the Irish were also being persecuted and ridiculed because Americans thought they were going to steal their jobs. Both cultures were considered outcasts from American society, however, there were rules enforced to prevent Chinese people from getting jobs while the Irish were just excluded from the community.

Daniel Lee
The Irish and Asians had similar motivations for their migration too America as both were coming to America in search of work. Although both groups had the same intentions the Asians were faced with more restrictions when arriving to America. They were faced with racism and laws were formed where Asians were barred from coming directly to America. Because of these laws, the Asians had first arrived to places in North America, Mainly Canada, and had gradually worked their ways through the borders until they reach south America. The impacts these migrations had carried were both a positive thing as well as a negative thing. With more people came more diversity but also racism.

Eugene Kim
People in Ireland migrated to America because of its potato famine. Because Irish people were in poverty, potatoes became the main source of food. When potatoes go wrong, they are not able to be restored. In the 19th century, the potato famine struck. Potatoes were in horrible conditions, and diseases started to spread. The people started to move to the United States. They moved to east coastal areas, such as Boston, New York. People lived in poor conditions and had to work long hours. In East Asia, work was unable to be found. So, people went to the United States to find jobs and opportunities. However, the U.S. did not want any immigrants, so they were pushed to Canada, Mexico, and the border states. People took jobs from the north and southern borders of America. East Asian people face a lot of racism and discrimination. The wages were also low, and people had to work a lot to stay there. The impacts of these communities were that there were more racial and ethnic diversity in the United States, but racism grew at the same time.

Then they protest for better work conditions after the civil war, allowing for better opportunities for the future Irish immigrants coming to America. The Asian migrants were not forced from their homeland, rather they were making access routes from Asia to the Americas. However, because of the mass number of migrants, the U.S. created restrictions that denied access into the country for many Asian migrants. Canda, Mexico, and some South American countries created similar restriction to those that the U.S. ahd, causing the migrants to travel from country to county until they were accepted. These restrictions created Anti-Asian thinking which would not benefit the Asian community. They were rejected, discouraged, and like the Irish, discriminated against.
