The author, Emily Dickinson, suggests that a person can be prepared for death and try to put everything in order, but when the time is upon them they can still feel unprepared. This is shown throughout the poem when the speaker talks about writing a will and it says,"I willed my Keepsakes-Signed/away/What portion of me be/Assignable..."(lines 11-14). This part of the poem shows that the author has tried to prepare for death by creating a will for others. In another part of the poem it says, "With Blue-uncertain-stumbling/Buzz-/Between the light-and me-"(line 16-18). This quote symbolizes that the speaker is still not fully prepared for death because the author chose to use words such as "stumbling" and "uncertain" to show the speaker was not completely ready to go. These excerpts from the poem show that the meaning of the poem was to convey the message that people can try to prepare for their death, but they can still not be ready to die.

Whitman's poem is based around a time of war and he is trying to convey the message that war is brutal and kills innocent men. He conveys this message by stating the scenery of dead or wounded soldiers scattered throughout the poem. In one part of the poem it says the main character sees "Faces, varieties, postures beyond/description, most in obscurity,/some of them dead,/Surgeons operating, attendants/holding lights, the smell of ether,/odor of blood"(line 37-42).This part of the poem shows how dreadful the war was and how it was so awful that a person could literally smell the stench of blood from all the dead and wounded soldiers. Another particular quote that is very particular is where it talks about a certain solder and it says, "At my feet more distinctly a soldier,/ a mere lad, ind danger of/ bleeding to death,(he is shot in the abdomen,)/I stanch the blood temporarily,(the/youngster's face is white as a lily,)"(line 27-32). In this text we see that one of the soldiers wounded is basically a boy and this is awful. In addition, we can infer that he is just an innocent boy because the author writes his face is as white as a lily and the color white represents innocence. Both these quotes show the reasons why Whitman despised the war and how he believed war is brutal and ends up killing lots of innocent men.

onomatopoeia is seen in the poem when the author writes about what sound she hears when she dies. She writes, "I heard a Fly buzz"(line 1). The impact of the buzzing noise is put in the poem to show that the speaker's mind is secluded from her surroundings and she can hear even the slight buzzing of a fly.

In addition, the author also uses a simile in the poem in order to describe how silent it is when the person is near death. She writes," The Stillness in the Room/Was like the Stillness in the Air-/Between the Heaves of Storm-"(lines 2-4). In these lines Emily relates the silence in the room to heaves of a storm and this helps the reader imagine the silence in the room.

Literary Elements

In Whitman's poem he likes to use imagery a lot because it allows him to force his readers to visual the harsh and true scenes that occur during war. In the poem he uses imagery when he writes,"The crowd, O the crowd of the bloody forms, the yard outside also fill'd,
Some on the bare ground, some on planks or stretchers, some in the
death-spasm sweating,"(line 45-50). In this part of the text we can visualize the many bloody and helpless soldiers that are scattered all over the "impromptu hospital".

Another literary element that Whitman uses in this poem is a simile. In this poem he uses a simile to describe a young soldier who is dying from a gun shot wound. Whitman writes, "I stanch the blood temporarily,(the/youngster's face is white as a lily,)"(line 32-33). This simile is important to this poem because a lily is symbolic of innocence and the soldier who was shot was just a boy so Whitman wanted to make sure the fact that an innocent boy was fighting in a bloody war got across to his audience. This allowed him to convey his hatred of war in general and even the Civil War to be more specific.

This picture represents Whitman's poem because the poem is all about war and how war causes the death of many men and even boys that are just starting to learn what being a man is. This picture shows a group of soldiers marching into battle and leading the pack are young boys. This just shows that Whitman's poems are n't just painting some imaginary picture, but shedding light on what really happens in times of war.
