7: I showed my knowledge of collaborating with culturally diverse families. I focused on understanding my own biases and privileges. I considered my communication language and barriers for meetings.
8: I was able to reflect on what I was doing well and what I could improve on. I reflected on what I learned from others and how I could apply it. I reflected on how I used to approach problems by just talking them out and coming to a consensus. Now I have a variety of problem-solving strategies that I can use when I come across any conflict. I was also able to reflect on how I would share what I learned and how I would share information with families.
9: I was able to research the current topic of culturally relevant teaching and communicating. I considered how I had communication before and how I do now. I check that I know the families' first language and translate if needed and I make sure that I consider work and travel barriers when trying to plan a meeting. I also need to keep up to date on culture and ensure that I am not being offensive in my communication.

1: I learned how collaboration can mean different things. A truly collaborative environment has two more parties that are working for a common goal and shared vision (Berman, 2006). However, some people just get together to talk without a plan and it does not always work. Strategies that lead to good collaboration include making eye contact, listening to others, appreciating others’ ideas, and offering feedback (Aguilar, 2015).
2: I found educator practices that could hinder a relationship such as assuming all families speak English and sending newsletters in only English. Or, using only one form of communication such as email when not everyone has internet. Being mindful of these can improve relationships.
3: A current issue I explored in this having culturally sensitive communication and being aware of my student’s backgrounds. I also explored the growing topic of co-teaching and how it applies to my classroom this year.
4: I was able to reflect on my practices in collaboration and what I could do to improve. I reflected on how I wanted to focus on creating a list of resources for families so they can educate themselves.

I looked at The Farmer’s House, Tri-County Mental Health Services, and PCS Behavioral Health which are all close to where I work and have a connection with my school. I currently have a co-teacher and I was able to take these collaboration skills and use them when working with her. I applied the different co-teaching models one teach and one lead, team teaching, station teaching, alternative teaching, and parallel teaching (Alexander, 2009). I was able to try out a new style of co-teaching that worked well with my students.

We have a school vision and values that we could bring up at the start of each meeting. One more thing I found valuable in this article was promoting a community working environment (Agius, 2021). Specifically, having a daily morning huddle is a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page. I have had times where we all thought we were doing the same thing in class but plans changed and no one told anyone else. It caused some confusion and chaos right before the first hour.
Article: https://blog.hubspot.com/service/team-collaboration

Good interpersonal skills include taking notes, listening to colleagues, and encouraging others to speak (Duwadi, 2014). Personally, I believe I have good interpersonal behavior. I listen to others and make eye contact while nodding. I will ask questions when I am confused and recap what is said. I sometimes notice that in meetings the same few people talk.

One area that I have grown and developed in is using collaborative strategies. I would generally attend meetings and if an issue came up I would hear others’ opinions and maybe speak up. Now, I have some resources that I can refer to when I need to collaborate to solve a problem. One strategy I like for my math team is the IDEAL Problem Solving Model (Nikols, 2020). This would allow us to first identify the problem. Then we will define goals. The goals would be what we want students to know and what we want them to get out of the lesson/notes/activity/etc. Then we can explore each strategy and maybe even look up new ones. Then, an important part of IDEAL is anticipating outcomes. This is a big reason I chose this strategy. While teaching it is important to have the end in mind. We need to think about the problem we could encounter, what we expect them to learn, how we expect them to react, etc. Then, we need to implement whatever we choose (Act). Finally, we will look back and learn. I think this is also important for students to know. I have posted problem-solving strategies in my classroom to help my students when they come across an issue.
