Roman funerals were similarly held outside of the city, or outside of the living area. However, Romans often brought offerings of food and wine in order to please the gods .Also semi-similarly the Romans burn the bodies of the dead in a funeral pyre. We also burn our dead just in a crematorium.

In ancient funerals, whenever the person dying gave the final breath, someone very close to this personal would try to catch the last breath in order to catch the soul. Nowadays, people simply use blessing and regular open casket funerals to honor a death.

Roman funerals were different in the fact that there was a parade after the death of someone to celebrate their life whereas a modern funeral would generally be private. Families offered eulogies at the funeral if the deceased was an important member of society, similar to our eulogies. They also prepared a feast which many modern funerals do as well.

Two Roman funeral customs are: When an emperor died, he was buried inside of the city. This was to honor the life of an emperor. Another custom was that it was said that the funeral was not complete until there was a feast at the end of it. Two modern western funeral customs that differ from Roman funeral customs were; there aren't really emperors in modern day. Also, at the end of a funeral yes, there were house gatherings for the family with food after the funeral but there wasn't any food at the actual funeral.

Roman funerals often included professional mourners. The richer the deceased the more professional mourners. Today, funerals are usually private somber affairs and most would find it awful to see people paid to wail for someone they did not know. Like today families set aside days to remember their loved ones; however, the state actually set aside specific dates for it's people to commemorate their deceased loved ones.

In ancient Rome, funerals were a way of disposing the dead body. The Romans would do this by cremating the deceased. However, they normally buried any remains in the earth. Today, people either cremate or bury the entire body. If cremation was too expensive for a someone, then they had to bury the person outside of the city. Nowadays, there are cemeteries all in the city.

The Romans preferred dead bodies to be left outside the city (with few exceptions), and today, for the most part, we bury our loved ones where we choose. Also, mothers and others related to the corpse were not allowed to cry. Professional mourners were to be hired. Today, crying is a normal part of any modern Western funeral, or any funeral for that matter. Also, the Romans would have a funeral procession after the death of one to celebrate their life. Modern-day funerals are more intimate and personal.

One common funerary practice of the ancient Romans was leaving bodies outside of city walls; this was officially for religious reasons (being that corpses were considered impure), but the practice was probably derived from the unsanitary nature of having too many rotting corpses in close proximity to living quarters. Today, cemeteries can often be found within city limits, and modern care for the dead sharply increase the cleanliness of the practice.
Another common practice was placing a coin under the tongue of a deceased person so that they could pay Charon to ferry them across the River Styx to the Underworld. Now that Olympian paganism has generally fallen out of favor with most people, though, this is not a common sight at funerals today.

Cremation was a common practice in Ancient Rome, and today, while not as common, it is still a practice in certain religions.
