A Long Walk to Water Week 2 by Brynley Martin

Salva and Naya seem to be able to easily tell which village a person is fro because of the markings on their skin. How do we distinguish what groups people belong to? What are some ways that Salca and Naya respond to the unfair circumstances in their lives? Thoughts/questions that you have from the reading this week.

Some ways we can distinguish what groups people belong to is by their accents if someone is British, clothing if someone is wearing a traditional piece of clothing from their culture, religion if someone is wearing a piece of clothing from their religion, race if someone had a darker skin tone and many more. Some ways Salva and Nya respond to their surroundings pretty well, especially Salva because he does not have any family besides his Uncle. I do not have any thoughts or question about the book so far.

We group people in many ways based on the way they speak, dress, or keep themselves. People from different parts of the world and country have words they say differently or have accents. We can also group people baes on the different languages they speak? We also group people based on race which is skin color and facial features. We also use religion which could be catorgarized by their way of life, clothes, and religious symbols they wear. Salva and Nya just do what they have to do to get through life. Even though it may be painful they persevere through it for both themselves and their families. An example is how Nya carries the water to her home barefoot in the hot sun.

Like Salva and Nya, we have ways to distinguish the groups we belong to in a community. We can distinguish by people's genders, their race, and how they dress. For example, by people's clothing, you may be able to tell by the quality of them if they are rich or poor. Salva and Nya are faced with unfair circumstances to which they respond to by being brave and continuing to do their jobs. They both walked on when they were tired of it. My thoughts on the chapters were that they were somewhat confusing, but detailed the suffering of Nya and Salva very well.

We distinguish what groups people are from by their race, religion, clothing, hygiene and accents. We can tell what parts of the world or country people are from by their accents. If someone is from Britain you can tell by how they speak. Also if someone wears very bright and expensive clothing you can tell that have have a lot of money and if someone is wearing shaggy and beat up cloths you can tell that they don't have as much money. Salva and Nya respond to their unfair circumstances because they are from different groups and don't want to fight each other. They also stay brave and strong to get through hard times.

We can distinguish what group people belong to by their race and hygiene. You can easily tell if they brush their teeth, or have clean clothes. You can also tell by their religion. For example, if they wear a headscarf or if they are always wearing a cross around their neck. The Dinka people have a special mark on their forehead that distinguishes them from other groups. Nya doesn’t really like that the groups are split because her father and her brother go out to hunt for food, Nya worries that they will get hurt by a person from the Dinka Tribe. Salva doesn’t really like it either, but they are just living with it and being brave through the whole thing. They aren’t letting the issues of war or separate groups get in the way of their everyday lives.

We can tell where people are from because of accents, culture, hygiene, gender, race, etc. Nya and Salva have very different unfair circumstances, Nya has to walk to to the pond everyday twice four hours there and four hours
back. Salva has to walk everyday sometimes without eating and they really don’t have any water to drink. Neither of them complain about it because it’s about what’s happening and there isn’t anything they can do about it it’s just their way of life.

We tell people apart by their gender, race, age, things they say or do, or sometimes, even their intelligence. For example, some people have darker skin than others. We can guess that they are from someplace sunnier or hotter. We judge if somebody is nice or not by thing they say to other people. We sometimes judge by intelligence, and pick people we think are smart (cough Trevor cough). Some ways Salva and Nya respond to their unfair circumstances in their lives are by doing the best they can and making the most out of it, and not complaining.

This day and age, we tend to distinguish people by their race, religion, culture and gender. Often times, we judge people by what sports team they are on or level they play. Salva and Nya have to work harder to overcome their disadvantages in resources. For example, Nya walks 8 hours a day getting water at a pond just to maintain survival, 7 months out of the year. Overall, was at times hard to really understand what Salva and Nya were feeling. However, everything is still very detailed and descriptive.

There are many ways to identify where somebody is from. Some easy ways are what they look like, what they’re wearing, or what language they speak. For example, if someone is wearing a head scarf and speaking Arabic, they can be identified as a Muslim. Salva and Nya’s ethnic groups have been at war for years. Many people have died as a result of the wars. Both Salva and Nya do as they are told by the adults of their groups and do their best to survive.

For example the way they look can show what group they are put into, like there height for instance. Another example is there beliefs, people believe in many things such as God, Zues and even aliens. When someone believes in things like these they are put into certain groups that believe in these things. They responded to these things because Nya and Salva work hard everyday with their certain group who also does. Overall I thought the chapter was great, the only question I had on this chapter was how they work so hard. I feel awful for Salva and Nya I don't understand how they work for hard.

We distinguish what groups people belong to by; their athleticism, their facial features, what religon they are, and what clothing they wear. For example, I can tell by someone's facial features by where they come from because some features are more common in other races, or places of origin. That leads me to my next example which is for what clothing they wear. Some cultures have different clothing they are required to wear, or are more common to them in where they come from. Another example is for athleticism, you might be able to tell where someone comes from, or what kind of family they belong to by how they are coordinated, or how they act in multiple sports they may or may not play. Lastly a final example of religion would be if they wear a crucifix necklace (Christian, Catholic), or a head dress. Salva and Nya respond to unfair circumstances in their lives by pushing through the pain, or hardships that they may have had (carrying a heavy water bucket, getting separated in war from family.)

Some other ways are by accents, whether southern, western, Pittsburgheeze, or British. Physical description is another example, like their height, their build, and how healthy they are. Their points of view is another way we distinguish people, like their political parties, and what there stances are on issues.

I think we distinguish people by their abilities, race, looks, the religion they believe in, and their age. We stereotype people all the time, and we don't even know it. Like the goth people, the Christians or other beliefs, the athletes, the girly-girls, etc. I think the world is getting more judgmental because we are jealous or just don't like them. You should never judge a book by it's cover!

When we distinguish people into groups, we are usually stereotyping. Salva new where his group was because they had a scar on their faces. We normally distinguish people by their culture, race, gender, and more. For example, the people who have expensive clothes on are normally known as being rich. Mainly because they can afford those type of clothes.
