Which of the dimensions of engagment are the most important when doing a task? Can you place them in order of importance?
Behavioural engagement: level of participation in the activity (task)
Affective engagement: the emotions felt when doing the activity (task)
Social engagement: "the bonds of identification and belongingness" that exist, for example, between students while doing the activity (task)
Cognitive engagement: active mental states with respect to the activity (task)

I think it depends on the type of task - if students are working collaboratively on a task then social engagement is probably more relevant than when they are working independently. The emotions students feel when completing a task are always important because they are unlikely to engage and make progress with a task that makes them feel negative emotions.

GM

To begin with, the order of the dimensions would be subjected to each student, depending on their age and their motivation. While working with secondary or high school students, I believe effective engagement might come first, because feelings are of high importance for this age group. It's what matters the most to them. Secondly, social dimension would occupy the second place, due to their urge to be comfortable with the person they are paired up (age, common interests, social status, etc.) Thirdly, the cognitive engagement demonstrates the students´deep understanding of the subject. Lastly, behavioral dimension would make them stick to the task and accomplish it in its due time.

Katia Piera
