I am not much of a reader and never have been. Sitting down and reading was ALWAYS difficult for me as a young reader. My brothers and I were always on the go, and my parents were gone a lot. Reading was hard for me, and I wasn't very good at it. I loved to socialize and play outside. That does not mean I did not get an adequate literary development. My mom ALWAYS sings to me. It was my favorite. We would go everywhere singing along to different songs. Some I knew, some I had to learn. My literacy skills grew with all the singing we did. Also after talking to my mom, she said, "I was always her favorite to sing with." I LOVED to write. My parents were telling me how I could spend hours writing a story that I had created. They also reminded me about how much I loved to buy new journals to write my stories in. My mom kept all of them at home in a box. I was going through them a couple day ago and I came across I "series" I had made up. I was a very active kid or hated sitting still to read. Over the years, my attitude has changed, and I have a little bit more self-control. I am able to appreciate reading more! My main point though is that, even though my parents did not MAKE me read every day, my literacy skills were still being developed through speaking, listening, and writing. I do believe though that reading is extremely important, and looking back I wish I would have done more of it.
