Isabel lives in Havana, Cuba and riots are happening making it a horrible place to live, so they leave on a handmade boat made by their neighbors and they set sail to Miami. Lots of struggles occurred for her but eventually she made it to Miami after the boat started to fall apart, her mother gave birth on boat and her grandfather scarified  himself to the coast guard. Lastly, Mahmoud is from Syria where missiles are exploding all over town and it is best to just be invisible. Him and is family made it out and they started to head to Turkey and then tried to go by boat to Greece, but complications occur and their inflatable boat pops and they lose his sister and then goes to prison and then meets up with Josef’s sister. The family of Pandas came home and found that the congee was eaten,  the broken chair,  and found Goldy sleeping in their bed. After their father walked out it left them homeless and to sleep in cars and live paycheck to paycheck. Georgina struggled to watch her mother work several jobs but still not making enough money to provide for her family to get an apartment. She also struggled once her friends found out that she no longer lived in her apartment, so she became embarrassed that she was in this position. So Georgina decided that to help her family she was going to steal a dog and return it for a larger amount of money. During the entire book she has to decide what is morally right vs. wrong and if she should steal a dog to get more money. By the end of the book, she realizes that what she is doing is wrong and she needs to return the dog and confess to the owner what she did.
