(post #1) : TED Talk - Mental Health

Summary: The TED talk discusses the negative stigma around mental illness, and how many coordinate it with the "madman". Many ignore the issues and struggles of mental illness by demonizing the victims.
Reflection: This message was so important to me because its upsetting when society demonizes individuals with mental illness instead of trying to help them. We all struggle at times, so by setting up these expectations that men can't express their feelings, it is only damaging their mental health. I want people to watch this video because many our ignorant when it comes to mental illness, and they treat victims as monsters. Everyone needs to be honest with themselves and look after one another, as we never know what the person next to us is struggling with.

From this article, there are two very important rights that you must remember. First, you have the right to remain silent, and don't have to say anything without a lawyer present. Also, it is always important to stay calm. Don't try to fight with the police, as it can cause aggression and violence. And if you see police brutality, you are given the right the film the scene as long as you are far enough away without being a burden.

J. Cole's musical video to "Crooked Smile" is very impacting and deep. Not only is it about the War on Drugs and police brutality, but it is a tribute to seven-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, an innocent victim. The video shows an ordinary day for a lower class man and a DEA agent, and how it leads to the raid on J Cole. The video holds the purpose to show the life of drug dealers, and why they end up in that position: to make an income. It gives outsiders an inside perspective, and to have a deeper understanding on how the War on Drugs and police brutality are intertwined.

Discrimination is embedded in the LGBTQ community's history. However, in recent years, America has taken strides to obtain equality for this social group. Every year, San Francisco holds Gay Pride, a huge parade and event for all members or supporters of the LGBTQ. This year, I went to Pride, and had such a special experience. To me, it is so beautiful to see everyone come together to celebrate their community and share love. The LGBTQ community is so important in our society, and deserves to be treated equally.

https://bartable.bart.gov/files/images/discoveries/SF%20Pride2_1200x675_0.png

My family has had a huge impact on my political ideology. Although my dad is a registered republican because of my grandparents, both of my parents mainly follow the democratic party. This has caused me to grow up in a democratic household, where I always looked at political issues from a democratic view. However, what made me a liberal was by being different from my parents. My parents grew up in a different generation and different areas (Illinois and SoCal), causing them to at times have biased views or opinions. So by hearing their judgmental views at times, it has caused me to lean more towards the liberal side of the spectrum, as I want to be more accepting of the social groups that are discriminated against.

Media has had a huge impact on my political ideology. Ever since I was little, I have had full access to everything in a political sense, from the news to social media. I was always updated with current events and what was going on in politics. And since I grew up in the bay area, I got political news that liberals and democrats want to see. Everything I see on social media is either about Trump acting out or events of discrimination and abuse towards minorities. This has heavily impacted my political ideology of being a liberal, as I sympathize with those who live through oppression, and am constantly informed on Trump's racist, sexist, homophobic, etc decisions.

Summary:
In 1960, segregation was legal in various states and areas. However, on February 1 in North Carolina, four teenagers sat a lunch diner and refused to leave. At this time, black people and white people were segregated in public areas. The four teenagers were from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and took a small and courageous stand against segregation. Their goal was to fight against the legalized oppression on their own since little change was being done to the issue.
Analysis:
Although these four teenagers' act of small, it spread across the country rapidly. People began following their sit-ins, and by the summer, the protest had spread to 50 different cities, desegregating counters one by one. The Greensboro Sit-Ins were so impactful on America, and ended up contributing to the Civil Rights Act of 1984, outlawing segregation in all public places. Their movement can still be felt today, as BLM continues to fight for equality and equal opportunity.
Reflection:
From the Greensboro Sit-Ins, students can learn that at times, you must take social issues into your own hands. You don't need a lot of people to make a difference, as the sit-ins was originally only 4 teenagers. Students and the youth can have a big impact on society if they're willing to put themselves out there in order to make change. At times, you can't count on the higher powers to make a difference, and only the few can bring awareness to the issue.

1. Joseph R. Biden believes in strengthening economic protections for low income workers. This element is very important to not only me, but to the US. The US has a HUGE wealth and income gap, as most of the country's money is in the top 1%. It is distributed very poorly, causing the lower class the struggle tremendously. With Joe Biden's emphasis on this, low income workers will be protected more, as their economic situations will be strengthened. It's important to protect and prioritize ALL citizens, especially those who are in financial struggle and need aid.
2. Julian Castro believes in fixing the immigration system by decriminalizing the border crossings. There is a lot of negative stigma around immigration in the US, causing much controversy on the borders. At the moment, the borders are a very dangerous place, as people are being arrested and put into cages. It's important for this candidate to prioritize fixing the immigration system, because as of right now, it is abusing many natural rights.
3. John Delaney believes in universal health care. This element is so important because it targets the lower class. It's unfair and abusing someone's rights if they are unable to receive health care just because they can't afford it.
4. Amy Klobuchar believes in addressing drug addiction and the opioid crisis. Drug addiction is a big issue throughout America right now, and many are dying from it. Instead of putting a negative stigma around those that are addicted, its important to provide aid and support. Discriminating them is doing no good; the only way to stop it is by addressing the issue.
5. Bernie Sanders believes in cutting the influence of "the billionaires". This element is a huge problem in America at the moment, as the rich have a huge influence on the country.
Reflection:
As ideal as my candidate is, it is a president for a perfect world. A lot of these elements are very liberal, and much of the county disagrees with liberal's values. The only people that would vote for my ideal candidate is liberals, and possibly some democrats.
