The Gift (book) by Alrila Lequeste

"[Lequeste] had me running around in someone else's shoes. Not only that, but I found myself able to care about others for once. This book changed my life, and it can change yours too. That is, if you're willing to let it!" -Anonymous

*BRIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGG!* That's the bell ringing. I'm late for class, again. I rush through halls and as I walk in the classroom door five minutes later Melody tries not to laugh. I don't know why until I look, but she points to the wall behind me. I turn, and I realize that the teacher, Mrs. Kikoka, has put my picture up on the 'detention' wall. I pretend to ignore it and I sit down in my seat at my desk (of which just so happens to be right next to Melody's twin brother Markol). Now the teacher speaks, and she writes something on the board. I raise my hand because I know the answer to the math problem she wrote on the board. The answer is 3. Mrs. Kikoka does not call on me. She calls on Markol. He glances at my paper that I did my math on and he says the answer. I try to tell the teacher that he cheated but she does not listen. Class ends, and then we all go our separate ways. Felicia from Mr. Diza's class walks over to me. She asks what Melody did THIS time, and I tell her it was actually Markol THIS time. She looks at me with disbelief, and then she walks away because the bell rings again. And then I remembered who's class was next. The one and only Mr. Disaster Dicazder.

I am in line in between my two best friends, Gertie and Jaylen. Gertie is a class SUPERSTAR and is WICKED smart. Jaylen is PERFECT at sports and is the shortest yet strongest AND fastest in the whole school. Sometimes I wonder how we even became friends in the first place, since I'm the AVERAGE one. Mr. Dicazder is walking out of the door to the his classroom. He teaches art. Normally, I would be SUPER excited for art class. But ever since Ms. Maladora retired and Mr. Dicazder was hired to take her place, I've absolutely LOATHED it. As we walk into the art room, Mr. Dicazder glares at me. I stand at my canvas and Mr. Dicazder gives instructions. He smiles evilly at me, because he knows that I can't draw a DOT without making a HUGE mess, and now he's making us paint things with ONLY dots. I very carefully pick up the paintbrush out of the paint bucket. No mess. I lift up the paint brush to shoulder level. No mess. I might actually be able to DO this! I step a little closer to the canvas to mark it. *SPLAT!* I accidentally knock over the yellow paint and it spills all over the floor. Now I'm in big trouble. Mr. Dicazder is REALLY angry. And suddenly, I'm being pulled over to the Principal's Office.

Going into the hallway, the GCADS (Guidance Counselors for Autistic and Disabled Students) team walks by. I watch as they take a slightly younger than me kid out of their classroom and leads them to the GCADS Workspace. I go right past. I am walking into the Principal's Office when Principal Kania tells me to sit down. She is talking about how messes aren't good and stuff. I tell her I am having a bad day. She says it's okay and to take a five minute break from class. I say thank you and rush out into the hall and to the bathroom. Locking myself in a stall, I start crying. I remember some advice that Dad gave me for whenever I started crying. Go to the nearest sink, turn on the water, and splash water all over my face and arms. I do just that. Since I still have time, I go over to the window that looks over the beach. I look over, directly to where the land begins and the waves stop. Then I notice a girl wearing palm leaves for clothes. The girl is dark-skinned and absolutely beautiful. Her long black hair is somehow kept perfectly smooth based off of what I see, and she holds a brush made of branches and what looks like homemade glue with thorn pieces in it. Now she's running to a nest thing covered in sand. I think she's homeless. She looks cold. She's looking around for something to give her warmth. I wonder what her name is. The bell is ringing a third time. Why must it be so loud? I go to class, still thinking about the girl and how I'm going to help her. Because I am going to help her. No matter what.
