For the Botanic Garden art exhibition, I looked at art from the likes of Andy Goldsworthy, who used elements from nature to create artwork. Goldworthy mainly used twigs, rocks, and different coloured , and arranged them by colour or size to create a piece of sculpture or eye-catching art.

When I first saw his artwork, I found it very mesmerizing as he used such simple everyday elements of nature and created them into a bright piece of art. His use of colour specifically attracts me to his work as it's not only pleasing to the eye, but could also be interpreted as having meaning. Before learning and researching about his work, I had never of heard of his work before, but now I am interested in his work and how he likes to manipulate objects for his art.

When visiting the Botanic Gardens, my challenge was to look out for different shapes, colours, lines, textures, and sizes, and take pictures of each element I find to further compare and analyse each picture I took at the end. I had never paid this much attention to detail in nature prior to this trip, and it made me realize the beauty and art that is around us. I thoroughly enjoyed this process as it was inspiring and made me realize that in the future, I should pay more attention to nature and how it in itself is art.

There were many sculptures and art pieces during my trip to the Botanic Garden, with plaques at each sculpture explaining the artists, and the story behind it which I found very motivating.

Our task at this art class was to find the different textures, shapes, colours, lines, and sizes throughout the garden, and then compare my findings with my classmates. In doing this, it showed me how art can be in nature, and can be interpreted in different ways by different people .

During the online class, we didn't focus on any specific artist, but we did look at multiple different examples of carved pumpkins and how their carvings have very different types of style. The first task I had to do was carve out a pumpkin, and make a shape on the side for Halloween. I had done this task before, but doing it again after looking at inspiration from both my lecturer and my peers made it more exciting as they came up with ideas that I had never thought of before. I really enjoyed this process as it was very childlike and simple, and it was able to be used as an actual decoration for Halloween. If I could do the task again, I would attempt to add more detail to the face of my pumpkin.

For the second task for the online class, I had to create a spider and spiderweb out of recycled materials. I looked at no previous artist who had done this, but again I did look at multiple images online to help inspire my ideas. I used yarn for the actual spiderweb, and then the spider was made out of a recycled water bottle, and old pencils and batteries. This process was very interesting as if used in an early childhood education setting, it can teach children about the importance of recycling. I found this task fun, however it was a hassle to take the spiderweb back down afterwards. When it was finished, all of my class compared out artwork to each other, this was very fascinating as I loved to see how my peers interpreted this task in their own house, and what materials everyone used to create their spider. If I would do this task again, I would do it outdoors to create a better decoration and allow more people to see it and be inspired by it as well.

For this task, I focused on learning about Henri Matisse's work, and how he used random shapes and cut-out's to create both abstract art, and art using shapes. Matisse's work often used multiple different colours set in a specific arrangement to create an image which seems alive. When first seeing his artwork I was confused on how he could make an image using random shapes, but after trying it myself I found it to be quite unique and fun. I wasn't familiar with the artists work before learning about it in class, but now I am quite familiar with it, and I enjoyed researching about the meaning behind his art pieces as well. The bright colours, the abstract shapes, and the hidden meaning genuinely attracts me to Matisse's work.

For my first task, using a Matisse's style mindset, I began to cut out random coloured shapes and arrange them on a page in a way that I preferred. Personally, I wanted mine to consist of a hidden meaning or story behind it, using different colours to mean different things. I found this task difficult to do as it was hard for me to cut out the shapes in the way that I wanted them to look like, and I was not happy with how I arranged it. However, to fix this I continued to move my pieces of paper around until I was happy with the image I created. When it was done, I walked around the room to look at my peers work, and I was majorly inspired. Some classmates added a 3-dimensional aspect to the art, and some did the art in a simplistic, but effective manner. If I was to do it again I would definitely use ideas from my peers and approach my art piece from a more simplistic point of view. However, at the end of this task, all of my classmates brought their work together, to create a big piece of art using Matisse's style.

Shadow cut-out's were also done in this lesson. For these, cut-out's of shapes of characters or objects were done in black paper, and stuck them onto lollipop sticks. I then went into a dark room, and shone light onto the cut-out to create a shadow like figure on the wall. This task would be perfect for younger children as both a role-play method, and a method of teaching through story. I didn't believe that my cut-out was going to work, but once I did it, it worked effectively and looked very exciting. My work was inspired by the time of year we were in, as it was between Halloween and Christmas, I created characters and objects which were similar to these holidays. I would most definitely use this art method in a childcare setting.
