Based on the title, illustrations, and summary on the back of the book I can infer the protagonist Conor, is facing issues and having nightmares while his mom is very sick. Through the pictures I can see he is trying to overcome this monster which could relate to the plot pattern of overcoming the monster, in which Conor is the hero. The reviews show that Conor will face his fears and hardships to overcome the monster, that may not be a monster exactly.

What did you learn from reading the exposition?
With the first two chapters I have learned that Conor suffers from the same nightmare most nights and one night a yew tree his mom talk about a lot turns into a monster, but he strangely isn't scared of it. I also learned Conor is very independent because his mom is very sick and his dad lives in America. He cooks and cleans for himself and his mom who is too weak to do anything.

How have Conor's life experiences impacted him? How does that connect with some of his actions & interactions w/ others?
The fact that Conor is going through so much such like not having a father around, being bullied, and dealing with his mother's illness makes him less scared of the monster because he has been through more scary things. While Conor's dad is not with him and his mom is sick he usually takes care of himself and gets upset when he is treated like a child by his grandma. When it was shared Lily told "everyone" about Conor's mom it showed the readers why Conor would seem upset by her and be mad at her. Conor's experience with taking care of his mom all the time makes him upset when his grandma doesn't think he can and takes care of her instead. When Conor describes his nightmare and how he would never tell anyone about it, which is why when the monster says he will tell the truth (about his nightmare) Conor gets defensive.

How is the monster going to help Conor? Why do you think that?
I think the stories will make him realize how he treats others and help him understand himself. We've already seen in the first story where the queen witch is supposed to be his grandma who he was mad at, he even wanted the monster to get rid of her. The story helped him realize that not all heroes are good and not all villains are evil, showing him his grandma can't be as evil as he thinks.

Why do you think the grandma reacted the way she did?
Firstly I think she was just in shock because of how hard she was worked to keep the house clean. Second, all the pressure of her daughter's illness and Conor's dad coming back and work would stress her so much that she would want to break something. Third, I think she realized that everything has already fell apart and she just felt like it didn't matter if one other thing was destroyed.

One night a yew tree outside his bedroom window calls out to him and turns into a monster, even when the monster grabs Conor and smashes things around him he is weirdly calm. The next morning we've learned Conor is pretty mature for his age and takes care of himself and does chores to help his mom.

The monster made everyone see the invisible man through pain and destruction. The invisible man was no longer invisible, but feared.

How does each tale embody Conor's experiences?
The first tale connects to Conor's experiences because at the time the story was told Conor's grandma had just come to visit and it was clear that Conor didn't like her that much. After their little fight the monster told a story about a prince and his evil step mother, because she was a witch Conor thought about her like her grandma and wanted her to be punished who didn't really do anything wrong. In the second tale it was about an Apothecary who was bitter and ran out of business because of more modern medicines. In this story Conor is like the Apothecary who Conor thinks needs to be punished, but instead someone else get the punishment. He ends up destroying his grandma's sitting room and thinks his grandma would be outraged, but just like in the story he doesn't get the punishment which makes him feel worse. As for the third story it was about an invisible man, the monster told it right when Harry said he would ignore Conor. In both the story and Conor's life the invisible man and Conor wanted to be finally seen, so they both used the monster to get everyone to see them even if it was bad attention.

What met/didn't meet your expectations in the movie?
In the movie I expected Conor's mom to look more weak, in the book it described how she was very thin and all of her hair was gone. In the movie she looked pretty healthy and even had short hair which shouldn't be possible with cancer treatments. Conor also looked younger than I thought he would, in the book he's supposed to be 13 years old but be looks younger. On the other hand the monster looks like the silhouette in the book and even had the branches sticking out in the back of his head.

If you could re-cast/revise one character, who would it be? How would you change them and why?
I think in the movie most of the actors did really well and mostly met my expectations, which is why I would instead add in Lily into the movie. I don't know which actor would suit her best but I felt like she played a big role in the book, being the one to share the news about his mom, standing up for him when Harry would bully him, and near the end told him she saw him, for who he was. In the book she helped him grow as a character and learn that even one friend can make all the difference.
