Coniferous Forest

Definition: A coniferous forest is established as a forest that is comprised of evergreen conifers or cone-bearing trees. Being thought of as the largest land-based biome, It blankets more than 15% of Earth’s complete land area.

Favorite Animal: Wild Yak

Unique Adaptation: Heavy fur coats to keep them warm in a cold climate.

Favorite plant: Spruce

Unique Adaptation: Long needle like leaves to prevent drying out.

The Tundra

Definition: A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen.

Average temp: -34 C (-30 F)

Average precipitation: 6-12 inches (150-250 millimeters)

Favorite animal: Arctic fox

Unique Adaptation: Compact body with short ears and legs that reduces exposure to the cold.

Favorite plant: Arctic Poppy

Unique adaptation: Deep root system that access moisture and nutrients from permafrost.

Invasive species: Atlantic Salmon. Competes with the Salmon that is native to the Tundra waters.

definition: Deserts are the driest biomes on earth, made up of sand and empty land.

Favorite animal: Kangaroo rat

Unique adaptation: very good hearing to hear silent predators coming for them

Favorite plant: tumbleweed

Unique adaptation: thorns and when they die they spread lots of seeds

Invasive species: Tumbleweed, when it dies it drops tons of seeds and since it has thorns when it is blown away it can hit and kill animals

Open Ocean: An open ocean is a zone of an area in the ocean outside many coastal areas. 

Average Temperature: Can range from 30°c (86°F) to -2°C (28°F) but it varies by depth. The further you go down the colder it gets. 

Favorite animals: Jelly blubber

Unique adaptation: They have venomous substances that help capture their prey and defend themselves.  Their shape helps them navigate through different currents 

Favorite plant: kelp

Unique adaption: The blades on the kelp can absorb sunlight. The stripes on the kelp also act like stems so that the kelp can survive underwater.

Invasive species: Green crab They damage seagrass, and have very few predators. Which results in having more green crabs because there are no animals that go after them. 

Biome name: Chaparral

Definition: dense bushes and shrubbery mainly found in the coastal inland mountains, southern Oregon, and the Northern Baja California Peninsula.

Favorite animal: Jackrabbit

Special adaptation: a thin layer of fur to keep the animal covered from the sun

Favorite plant: California buckwheat

Special adaptation: specialized root system to store water so the plant can survive without water for long periods

Invasive species: the wild pig. they uproot native plants while rooting, which disrupts the plant communities by drying up the soil

Lake Michigan

definition: Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes and the largest freshwater lake entirely within the United States. It's a long, narrow lake that's 307 miles long and 118 miles wide, with an average depth of 279 feet and a maximum depth of 923 feet.

kills fish by latching on to gills and suffocating the fish. the mussel is invasive in almost every body of water in america.

Temperate Grassland

Definition: Lands dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or trees

Avg. temp: 10°C (50°F)

Avg. precipitation: 20-35 in (50.8- 88.9 cm)

Favorite animal: Black-tailed prairie dog

Unique adaptation: Family structures and communications to warn others of predators

Favorite plant: Buffalo grass

Unique adaptation: Smooth stems at nodes and narrow leaf blades to tolerate alkaline soil

Tropical Forest

Definition: a tropical forest is a forest in wet, tropical places around the equator. 

Average temperature: 20°C (68°F) to 25°C (77°F)

Average precipitation: 200-1000 cm or 79-394 inches

Favorite animal: Leopard

Unique adaptation: the spots are camouflage

Favorite plant: passion flowers

Unique adaptation: dots that look like butterfly eggs that keep butterflies from laying their eggs on them

Invasive species: African tulip tree. grows over plants and overshades them

Tropical Forest

Definition: A Tropical forest is a dense and warm rainforest with high rainfall, and a variety of different types of trees, as well as a variety of animals.

Average temperature: Average temperature is between 68-77 degrees fahrenheit (20-25 degrees celsius)

Average Temperature: 79-394 inches of rain per year (200-1000 cm).

Favorite Animal: Jaguar

Unique Adaptation: Uses their fur to blend in.

Favorite Plant: Kapok Tree

Unique Adaptation: The leaves shed during the dry season, preventing water loss, helping it grow tall.

Invasive Species: Slam Weed. Slam weed prevents tree regeneration, reduce biodiversity, and affects the soils concentration by 100-200%

Biome name: Chaparral

Definition: The chaparral biome is a shrubland ecosystem characterized by hot, dry summers, mild winters, and evergreen shrubs well-adapted to drought and heat.

Abiotic factors: Average annual temp 59°f and 15°celsius. The annual precipitation is 10-20 inches or 25.4 cm - 50.8 cm in rainfall. A coarse-textured shallow soil.

Favorite Animal: Mountain Lion

Unique Adaptation: Mount lions use their retractable claws to climb trees and capture prey.

Favorite plant: Chamise

Unique Adaptation: They can get as hard as iron.

Invasive species: Wild pig, which destroys the vegetation in the chaparral biome.

A freezing and harsh environment found in the far North and high mountains

b. Average temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit

The average temperature in the tundra is -14 degrees Celsius. In Fahrenheit, it is 6.8 degrees.

c. Average precipitation in Centimeters and inches

The average precipitation is 20 Centimeters. Or about 8 inches.

d. Favorite animal and unique adaptation

My favorite animal was the Snowy Owl. They use white feathers to help camouflage them in order to hunt other animals easier.

e. Favorite plant and unique adaptation

The Arctic Willow was my favorite plant. They have shallow roots, which allows them to thrive in soil with little nutrients.

f. Invasive Species

The Japanese Knotweed is an invasive species in the Tundra. They spread fast, which ruins habitats, compete with other plants that are native, and are incredibly strong, and have roots that can break concrete.

Intertidal ocean/zone

Definition: The intertidal zone is the area in an ocean that is between the high and low tide lines. It has a very harsh environment and conditions are not ideal. Even with the harsh conditions, an intertidal zone is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

pH: Usually around 33-35 ppt (parts per thousand), although this can change due to temperature and weather.

Zones: It has three main zones: the high tide zone, the middle tide zone, and the low tide zone. It also has a splash zone.

Favorite animal + Adaptation: Seastar/Starfish. It has suckers on the bottom of its legs so it sticks to the rocks it lays on. This prevents the organism from being washed away by the ocean currents.

Favorite plant + Adaptation: Coralline Algae. The algae does not need light to survive. This allows the algae to survive in nearly all places because it does not have a specific environment in which it needs to survive.

Invasive Species: European Green Crab. It is very aggressive to shellfish, which is a problem because there are multiple species of shellfish in intertidal zones. It also destroys habitats, one of the most common ways is through increasing erosion.

The Savanna Biome

Definition: a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees.

Average temp: 30°C or 86°F.

Average Precipitation: Between 30 and 40 inches (76 and 101 centimeters)

Favorite Animal: Giraffe

Unique Adaptation: Giraffe’s have a long neck, Prehensile Tongue, Tough lips, great eyesight, and can go long periods of time without water

Favorite plant: Acacia tree

Unique Adaptation: This tree has deep tap roots to help it get the water and nutrients that it needs (especially in the dry season)

Invasive species: The big-headed ant. They are smaller than native ants but they are very powerful. They are able to wipe out native ant species by cutting down acacia trees and raiding their nests.

Definition: Freshwater Biome; a biome with little to no salt at all

pH: 8.12-8.55

Zones: Littoral zone, the main basin, and then coastal areas

Animal: River Otter. Allow the otter to stay warm because of their water-repellent fur. Slim body shape allows quick movements to avoid predators  

Plant: Arrowhead. Grows fast and strong to combat harsh conditions. Then the hooks on the pants will enable it to climb and grow off of other things to maximizer life

Invasive Species: Zebra Mussel

Desert Biome

Definition: An area of land that receives less than 25 centimeters of precipitation in a year

Average temp: 11°C (52°F) in Winter and 32°C (90°F) in Summer

Average precipitation: <25 cm

Favorite animal: Jerboa

Unique adaptation: Large ears that enable them to cool down their blood and dissipate heat in hot temperatures

Favorite plant: Desert marigold

Unique adaptation: leaves, stems, and flower stalks are covered in small white hairs to retain moisture

Invasive species: Tamarisk. It grows fast and forms dense areas of shade that discourage native seedlings from growing, thereby decreasing the biodiversity of the ecosystem

Definition: An estuary is a partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean. Estuaries and lands around them are places of transition from land to sea. 

Favorite animal: Starry Flounder

pH Levels: 7.0 to 7.5

Invasive Species: Chinese mitten crabs are one of the most invasive species in estuaries. They burrow through affecting river banks and other aquatic habitats.

Zones: Estuaries are buffer zones between ocean environments.

Dominant plant: Saltmarsh

Unique adaptation: Thin leaves with scale-like hairs

Dominat animal: Sunflower Sea Star

Unique adaptation: Tube feet

pH Level: Reefs have a pH level between 8 and 8.4

Zones: Coral have 5 zones including, the lagoon, back reef, reef flat, reef crest, and the fore reef.

Favorite Animal Adaption: Manta Ray. They adapted to the coral reef and helped the reef. After Manta Rays eat zooplankton they return to the reef and fertilize corals with their waste.

Favorite Plant Adaption: Mangrove. Their roots protected themselves and the coral from the ocean's strong waves.

Invasive Species: Lionfish are invasive because their prey is a large variety of fish that graze on algae, which can cause the algae to overgrow. They also are dangerous towards humans.
