In one of Alice Walker's most popular writings, “The Color Purple, she follows the overall theme of the struggle African Americans face trying to reach the American Dream within a world that wasn’t crafted for them. Her book follows a young African American girl named Celie and the struggles she has to face throughout her life. This book covers struggles of violence, religion, race, sexuality, family, and many more. Throughout her struggles, she continues to persevere, and move forward but is not able to fully become who she wants to be. For example, Celie had a horrible past having to endure the rape and beating from her father and then soon be sold off to her “husband” who would continue to do the same. “But I don’t know how to fight, all I know how to do is stay alive.” Celie is stuck in a constant state of abuse and struggle. This cycle is very hard if not impossible to break. This writing is a great example of this never-ending cycle and is why Alice Walker's works are not in support of The American Dream because of the Injustices, Racial terrors, and Suppression African Americans endure.

https://go.gale.com/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=T003&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&searchResultsType=SingleTab&hitCount=22&searchType=BasicSearchForm&currentPosition=1&docId=GALE%7CCX2661800025&docType=Critical+essay%2C+Work+overview%2C+Biography%2C+Plot+summary&sort=Relevance&contentSegment=&prodId=GVRL&pageNum=1&contentSet=GALE%7CCX2661800025&searchId=R4&userGroupName=clar33415&inPS=true

This article talks about the importance of being a womanist and how it is rooted in the passing down of black traditions. African American Culture is often suppressed and looked over, the only way to keep it strong and alive is to practice and be proud of your heritage. “Mama, I'm walking to Canada and I'm taking you and a bunch of slaves with me.” “It wouldn't be the first time.” This quote is from Alice Walker's “In search of our Mother's garden.” It is referring to the time of the underground railroad and the struggle and fear of keeping African American culture alive on their trail to freedom. This struggle and constant fear of being caught while longing for freedom is another example of African Americans being unable to reach the American Dream. On this long journey, many slaves were in constant fear of being caught and many were and faced horrible consequences once back on the plantation. Being unable to leave your miserable life as a slave and being stuck limits your life tremendously. This limit of life correlates with Injustices, Racial Terrors, and Suppressions African American people face and why Alice Walker's works don’t support the American Dream.

https://go.gale.com/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=T003&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&searchResultsType=SingleTab&hitCount=22&searchType=BasicSearchForm&currentPosition=2&docId=GALE%7CCX3490201790&docType=Article%2C+Excerpt%2C+Topic+overview&sort=Relevance&contentSegment=&prodId=GVRL&pageNum=1&contentSet=GALE%7CCX3490201790&searchId=R4&userGroupName=clar33415&inPS=true
