For my classroom, the most important routine is truly all of the routines in the chapter; however, how to work in groups is the most important. I use inquiry-based learning and the first two units rely heavily on collaborative groups before students transition to free inquiry.

I think all of the routines at some point in the day/year may prove to be the most important, but academically I would say the most important routine would be the ones that stem around getting help. Students have to know when, how, and from whom to elicit help in order to progress in various tasks. When they know that it helps to free the teacher from time consuming "help" that was not needed or could have been handled without taking the teacher away from other opportunities for advancing students.
